When I load Sandboxie, it loads Internet Explorer and the current page is sandboxed.

But many times I click on a picture or link and IE opens up another window. So sometimes I may have 4-5 windows open besides the original window.

Are all the other 4-5 windows also sandboxed? The reason I ask is because Sandboxie doesn't show they are in the Sandboxie main window.

    Hello tonyseeking :)

    They should be,

Sandboxie only shows 1 because there's only one process of IE open even though there's multiple windows,

You can check by looking at the top of the windows and seeing the 2 sharp symbols (#) unless you turned that feature off,

You can also set sandboxie to put a border around all sandboxed windows.

    @tonyseeking,

As Gizzy states, child processes that are opened from a sandboxed, parent process are sandboxed as well.

Sometimes (not often) programs display their windows using special graphics that may circumvent the # signs from appearing. The new color border feature (an option available in version 3.34) may help in those situations. In addition, Sandboxie has a simple feature that lets you verify that the window is still sandboxed: http://www.sandboxie.com/index.php?FileMenu#iswindow

    1. How do I turn the # feature on?

    2. How can I set sandboxie border to show on all sandboxed windows?

Does Sandboxie really work as it claims?

Does using sandboxie when accessing questionable websites, really protect my Vista being infected?

That # symbol shows up in the upper left corner by default.

Yes and Yes. Many including me, have tested it by throwing all kinds of stuff at it.

You can really fine tune it, controlling what apps can run in the sandbox and what apps can access the internet. You can also block access to other drives and data folders.

The only thing that requires caution is when you remove something from the sandbox, that it is clean.

You know when you click on a link and it hijacks your web browser and a box keeps popping up no matter what you do? Well I was searching for a music download and I ran into one. It took over my browser completely. I just sat back and looked at it and laughed. I then went to the system tray and opened the Sandboxie control panel and deleted the sandbox, and poof! It was never there. But I am sure that there are some things that can escape Sandboxie.

    What do you mean?

I run sandboxie whenever I visit questionable websites. Then I just choose to delete the entire sandbox. Why do I need caution with that?

really? So using sandboxie won't stop my Vista being infected with something?

Can I really be infected with something just by using SandboxIE and visiting websites?

He means when you download a file you want to keep, and retrieve it from the sandbox.
It works fine, ie it protects you. What he meant is that, as with everything, flaws are found at times, and these are patched when found.
Realistically, finding something that can escape SBIE is really hard. But not impossible. It's not a "golden bullet". (or silver, now that i check google..)

There were a couple types of new malware that were able to penetrate Returnil. I think one was called robodog. Sandboxie I guess will protect against most things but I am sure there are people who know how to break out of it. XB Steve mentioned it.

right click on the yellow sandbox icon in sandbox control window, then choose "
sandbox setting", then under Appearance "display border around the window" then change to red colour.

You download a file you want to keep, so you can recover it from the sandbox.

Re: Are Sandboxie multiple windows sanboxed?

    Tony,

Just something for you to consider...

If you use the standard Sandboxie settings to delete the sandbox contents, then in actuality the junk isn't really wiped clear from you hard drive. It is still recoverable via certain software or forensic tools. In addition, if you had malware in that sandbox, then it could be automatically backed up by Windows System Restore during the standard delete process. (The malware can't do any damage there, unless you recover that restore point and -- for some reason -- choose to execute it.)

These issues may or may not be significant to you. Some folks are fine with Sandboxie's standard delete function. Others prefer a higher level of deletion that makes it all but impossible to recover deleted data and prevents Windows from backing up deleted sandboxed contents into System Restore. For them, Sandboxie's secure deletion tool is useful (Sandboxie Control >> Delete >> Command). This requires installation of SDelete or Eraser! programs. You can read more about it here: http://www.sandboxie.com/index.php?SecureDeleteSandbox
An an alternative, some of us use CCleaner's secure delete options since one can set it up to secure delete the sandboxes.

    Again, just food for thought...

Wow I don't even understand that. I'll have to go through the tutorial I guess. I wonder what happens when you delete the Sandbox while Returnil is activated? I hear that Returnil leaves a dat file. I wonder if it ends up there??

Awesome! Thanks for the heads up. I have Eraser installed and Ccleaner.

I used that link you gave and have now setup Eraser to be used when I empty Sandbox. Cheers :)

So now all content of Sandbox is securely erased using Eraser :)

    Hello tonyseeking,

You don't have to edit the ini for that feature,

In newer versions of sandboxie there's and option for it in sandboxie's settings,

Sandbox settings > Delete > Command

I don't see anything in Sandboxie Control that says "Settings". How do you locate it?

I am missing something because the only place that I see delete mentioned in the Control Panel is "Delete Files". How do I find Delete and then Command?

Why are you looking in the control panel?

    It's in sandboxie's settings,

Open sandboxie control by double-clicking the sandboxie icon in your tray
Right-click the sandbox you want to edit
    Click "Sandbox Settings"
    Then go to
    Delete > Command
