Apple Will Likely Replace iTunes on macOS With Standalone Music, Podcasts, and TV Apps in Next Major Update

Fellow developer Steve Troughton-Smith recently expressed confidence about some evidence found indicating that Apple is working on new Music, Podcasts, and perhaps Books apps for macOS, to join the new TV app.

I’ve been able to independently confirm that this is true. On top of that, I’ve been able to confirm with sources familiar with the development of the next major version of macOS – likely 10.15 – that the system will include standalone Music, Podcasts, and TV apps, but it will also include a major redesign of the Books app.

With the standalone versions of Apple’s media apps coming to the Mac, it’s natural to ask: what about iTunes in macOS 10.15? According to sources, the next major version of macOS will still include the iTunes app. Since Apple doesn’t have a new solution for manually syncing devices such as old iPods and iPhones with the Mac, it’s natural to keep iTunes around a little longer.

Mark Gurman from Bloomberg notes that Apple is preparing standalone Music, TV and Podcasts apps – presumably for inclusion in macOS 10.15 – to collectively replace iTunes. The intelligence lines up with earlier predictions from 9to5Mac who claimed iTunes would be renamed to Music and focus exclusively on that category.

In the absence of iTunes, users will be able to manage their Apple gadgets through the Music app.
Potential changes to iTunes for Windows weren’t mentioned.

I hope they will also develop apps for Windows, because this iTunes garbage really needs to retire on all platforms.

The company announced the end of iTunes today at its Worldwide Developer Conference, where Apple VP of Engineering Craig Federighi joked about iTunes’ bloat.

“Customers love iTunes and everything it can do. But if there’s one thing we hear over and over, is can iTunes do even more?,” he teased before presenting a version of iTunes that bundles in other Apple apps like Calendar and Mail, which got a laugh.
In reality, iTunes’ individual components are getting their own Mac apps.
Meanwhile, the Podcasts app for Mac offers a way to search, discover, subscribe and listen to your favorite audio programs, much as it does on iOS.

But it’s also got a new trick: it will now use machine learning technology to index the spoken words in podcasts. That will allow you to find more podcasts — or even individual episodes — that reflect your interests.

Thankfully, the company has now clarified that iTunes for Windows will remain available to users for the foreseeable future. In a statement to Ars Technica, Apple explained that the app will not be broken down into separate applications on Windows and there will be no changes to the functionality it provides.
The company's statement was, however, more ambiguous regarding the level of support it will provide for iTunes on Windows, and whether Windows users can expect to see any feature updates for the application in the future.

Too bad, on the other hand, they would have probably developed a Metro app for Win 10 only. I noticed that Facebook Messenger and Instagram are only available for Win 10, it's so annoying.

Apple on Monday announced MacOS 10.15 Catalina will be available today for support Macs The release follows the launch of iOS 13 and iPadOS in September.

Arguably, Catalina's biggest feature is that it signals the end of iTunes. Apple unbundled all of the various functionality of iTunes, such as Apple Music, Podcasts, and Apple TV. But don't worry, you can still sync your iPhone or iPad with your Mac -- that's done with the Finder app now.

But that transition is proving to be complicated for a certain subset of Mac users who’ve relied on the software to help manage their jobs: DJs.

According to Apple, along with Catalina’s removal of iTunes, users are also losing XML file support as all native music playback on Macs moves over to the official Music app, which has a new library format.
[...] iTunes became the de facto way for lots of DJs to sort through their massive file libraries and quickly find tracks while performing.
Additionally, according to Apple a previously reported fix saying users can manually export XML files in the Music app is incorrect.

Essentially, if you’re a DJ and you have put tons of time into sorting music in your iTunes playlists for whatever software you use, upgrading to Catalina will likely erase all your hard work.

Music software company Serato has released new official versions of its DJ Pro and DJ Lite software that are fully supported in macOS Catalina. The updated software works with Apple’s new Music app, which replaced iTunes in Apple’s latest desktop OS refresh, and libraries in Music can automatically load in the updated Serato DJ Pro and DJ Lite.
Along with updating its DJ software, Serato has also released a new version of its beat-making software Serato Studio that’s supported in Catalina. However, not all Serato products are in the clear.

So, if you’re a Serato DJ Pro or DJ Lite user that has updated to Catalina, everything should work just fine, and your Music playlists will load automatically in the software with no need for manual exporting.
