Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that 2023's iPhones will show a greater gap between the regular and Pro models, and also between the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

USB-C Instead of Lightning
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that at least some ‌iPhone 15‌ models, set to launch in the second half of 2023, will feature a USB-C port instead of Lightning to improve data transfer and charging speeds. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman went on to corroborate Kuo's claim, saying that Apple is testing iPhones with USB-C ports instead of Lightning.

In a September 2021 research note, Kuo forecasted that Apple will launch at least one new ‌iPhone‌ model with an under-screen fingerprint scanner in the second half of 2023, which would line up with the launch of the ‌iPhone 15‌ models, but he has not shared any further information about the feature since then.

3nm A17 Chip, But No Custom 5G Modem
Apple has committed to order chips fabricated using TSMC's 3nm process, which will reportedly be used for the iPhone 15 lineup's A17 chip. The 3nm process yields 30 percent better power consumption and 15 percent better performance over the 5nm process behind the A14 and A15, indicating notable advancements.

Apple's iPhone 15 enters trial production phase
This pre-production run will help iron out any wrinkles in manufacturing

In a nutshell: iPhone manufacturer Foxconn has reportedly started production on the next version of Apple's smartphone. Economic Daily News was first to report on the development, noting that the iPhone 15 has entered what is called the new product introduction, or NPI, phase. During this stage, Foxconn will use its production line to assemble iPhones in the exact manner they will be created during mass production.

This step gives both Apple and Foxconn the opportunity to ensure everything is operating smoothly, and also allows them to identify and implement tweaks that could increase efficiency, boost yields or lower production costs.
Some pre-production models have probably already been assembled, but those were likely put together by hand in small numbers.

The publication further notes that the manufacturing process will be a bit different for Apple this year with mass production kicking off in China and India within just a few weeks of each other. In previous years, production was many months apart.

The iPhone 15 and ‌iPhone 15‌ Pro's USB-C port and accompanying charging cables will feature a Lightning-like authenticator chip, potentially limiting their functionality with Apple-unapproved accessories, a rumor shared on Weibo suggests.

The rumor declares that Apple has developed its own variant of USB-C for this year's ‌iPhone 15‌ lineup and comes from a user who claims to be an integrated circuit expert with 25 years of experience working on Intel's Pentium processors.

Integrated circuit (IC) interfaces are semiconductor chips used to manage the sharing of information between devices. Since their introduction in 2012, first-party and MFi-certified Lightning ports and connectors contain a small IC that confirms the authenticity of the parts involved in the connection.

The authenticator chip allows Apple to encourage customers to buy genuine iPhone peripherals and receive a commission on MFi-certified accessories, but it also allows Apple to tackle counterfeit and potentially dangerous accessories.

The latest rumor seems to suggest that Apple has developed a similar custom IC for the USB-C ports on the ‌iPhone 15‌ and ‌iPhone 15‌ Pro, and presumably its charging cables. As well as the ‌iPhone 15‌ lineup, the new IC is apparently destined for new MFi-certified peripherals.

It is unclear if this addition could have any major implications for the functionality of the new devices, but it is possible that Apple could limit features like fast charging and high-speed data transfer to Apple and MFi-certified cables.

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the USB-C port on the ‌iPhone 15‌ and ‌iPhone 15‌ Plus will remain limited to USB 2.0 speeds – the same as Lightning.
