As the Apple Silicon transition moves forward, Intel-powered Macs continue to disappear from Apple’s lineup. This week, Apple has quietly discontinued the 21.5-inch iMac powered by Intel processors. This comes six months after the introduction of the redesigned 24-inch iMac with Apple’s M1 chip inside.

Apple had continued selling the entry-level Intel-powered 21.5-inch iMac until this week, though Apple made it rather difficult to find. Until it was discontinued this week, you could still find the 21.5-inch iMac through the Apple Store Online by visiting the this page and looking for the 21.5-inch toggle at the top.

Apple has not yet publicly commented on the discontinuation of the 21.5-inch iMac, which was first spotted by the YouTuber known as “Tech God.”

Apple had been selling the 21.5-inch iMac in a single stock configuration priced at $1,099 with a 2.3GHz dual-core 7th-generation Intel Core i5 processor. The machine was heavily criticized for its lagging specifications, outdated design, and comparatively high price.

Apple is still selling the Intel-powered 27-inch iMac with the previous-generation design. An updated model with a new design and Apple SIlicon inside is rumored to be scheduled for release sometime in the first half of 2022.

Some future Mac chips will have two dies instead of one.

Apple has already finalized the second generation of Mac processors, and the third generation is expected to be made with a new 3-nanometer process, according to a report in The Information citing people with direct knowledge of the plans.

The report says that the second-generation chips will use an "upgraded version" of the 5-nanometer process used for the M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max found in recent Apple Silicon Macs. But unlike those first-generation chips, some of the second-generation chips will have two dies instead of one, allowing for more processor cores.

A second-generation chip with just one die will be included in the long-rumored, redesigned MacBook Air as well as in iPads. That chip is code-named Staten. On the other hand, the MacBook Pro will feature more powerful second-generation chips code-named Rhodes.

The second-generation chips have already been finalized and are ready to enter trial production, according to The Information's sources.
The next Mac Pro's processor would be part of the generation that began with the M1. Code-named Jade, it will be based on the high-end MacBook Pro's M1 Max, but it will have two dies instead of one.

The more powerful third-generation processors are code-named Ibiza, Lobos, and Palma. Lobos and Palma are destined for the MacBook Pro and "Mac desktops." A lower-performance variant code-named Ibiza would head to iPads and the MacBook Air. A future A-series chip for iPhones is also expected to switch to a 3nm process around that time.

Much of the report focuses on relative performance compared to Intel's chips, as Intel leadership has announced its desire to try to win back Apple's business, either in terms of Apple again using Intel chips in Macs or in terms of Apple becoming a customer of Intel's chip fabrication business to make Apple-designed chips.

Today Marks the One Year Anniversary of the First Apple Silicon Macs

While it may feel rather hard to believe, today marks one year since the first Macs with Apple silicon were unveiled to the world.

At a virtual event on November 10, 2020, Apple introduced its custom-designed M1 chip, followed by three new Macs powered by the chip, including the MacBook Air, the lower-end 13-inch MacBook Pro, and the lower-end Mac mini.
With the M1 chip, Apple delivered on its promise of industry-leading performance per watt and faster integrated graphics than Intel processors.

"When it comes to low-power silicon, M1 has the world's fastest CPU core, the world's fastest integrated graphics in a personal computer, and the amazing machine learning performance of the Apple Neural Engine," said Johny Srouji, head of Apple's chip design team, in a press release.

Apple expanded the M1 chip to a new 24-inch iMac in April, and last month it unveiled even faster M1 Pro and M1 Max chips for the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.

"No one has ever applied a system-on-a-chip design to a pro system until today with M1 Pro and M1 Max," said Srouji.

At this moment, the 27-inch iMac, the high-end Mac mini, and the Mac Pro tower are the only remaining Intel-based Macs that Apple still sells, but even those models are expected to transition to Apple silicon within the next year or so.

The Information's Wayne Ma recently claimed that the next Mac Pro will use a variant of the M1 Max chip with at least two dies for even faster performance, adding that a future high-end Apple silicon chip could offer up to a 40-core CPU.

Gurman: Apple Silicon transition could be completed by WWDC with Mac Pro, iMac Pro, more

When Apple began the transition away from using Intel chips in the Mac in favor of Apple Silicon, it promised that the transition would take two years to complete. Now, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that he expects the Apple Silicon transition to be completed by WWDC 2022 in June.

In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Gurman doubles down on his previous reporting that Apple is planning a new Mac Pro, a more powerful Mac mini, and a large-screened iMac Pro, all powered by Apple Silicon.

The company has a bevy of new pro Macs in the works based on the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips that are already inside the MacBook Pro. That includes a smaller Mac Pro with up to 40 CPU cores and 128 graphics cores, a new Mac mini, and a large-screened iMac Pro. I’d expect Apple to finish its transition to its own silicon from Intel chips as early as June at WWDC 2022.

If Apple is indeed able to complete the Apple Silicon transition by June, it would mean we will see quite a few new Macs during the first half of 2022.

BTW, I have read that one of the most important people that was responsible for designing the M1 and M2 chips has switched from Apple to Intel, so I hope to see some interesting new Intel CPU's in the future. I believe by now it's clear that Apple CPU's and even AMD CPU's are way better than Intel's, but I did read that the 12th en 13th Gen chips are going to be pretty fast and will use less power.
