Apple Asks Foxconn to Move Some MacBook and iPad Production From China to Vietnam

Apple has asked Foxconn to move some of its iPad and MacBook assembly from China to Vietnam in an effort to minimize the impact of ongoing trade tensions between the U.S. and China, according to sources cited by Reuters.

Foxconn is building assembly lines for Apple's ‌iPad‌ tablet and MacBook laptop at its plant in Vietnam's northeastern Bac Giang province, to come online in the first half of 2021, the person said, declining to be identified as the plan was private.
"The move was requested by Apple," the person said. "It wants to diversify production following the trade war."
Apple is also reportedly seeking to expand iPhone production in Vietnam, although a report in August suggested the company was holding off until workers' conditions improve at supplier Luxshare-ICT's facilities.

Major Apple manufacturing contractors Foxconn, Pegatron, and Compal Electronics are all said to be expanding production in Vietnam as companies seek to reduce reliance on China and diversify supply chains to prevent concentration risks.

Vietnam is emerging as a major manufacturing and assembly hub for large technology companies, and Samsung manufactures as many as half of its smartphones there already.

Foxconn is set to build a new factory to produce tablets and computers in Vietnam, which could be part of Apple's plan to widen its iPad and MacBook production lines outside of China.

In November, it was claimed Apple asked Foxconn to move some of its iPad and MacBook production out from China to Vietnam, in a bid to diversify production.

The plant will be developed by Fukang Technology, reports Reuters a subsidiary set up by Foxconn for the project. There was no word on when the factory's construction would be completed, nor when it would be ready to commence production, but it is likely to do so before the end of 2021.

Apple Watch and MacBook production could move to Vietnam

For the past few years, Apple has branched out from China, moving some of its production to other regions like India and Vietnam. Currently, iPads and Airpods are manufactured in Vietnam. While this is a big deal for the country, it looks like the relationship could get deeper. Recently, Apple has had talks with Vietnam, as it might have it manufacture the firm’s Apple Watches and MacBooks.

hile things have yet to be set in stone, Luxshare Precision Industry and Foxconn in Vietnam have started test production of the Apple Watch. It is a highly sophisticated product, with lots of technology crammed into an extremely small space. Because of this, it requires a lot of skill to produce, especially when it is being created by the millions.

According to the source, the shift for MacBook production is taking a little longer, as Apple has run into hiccups trying to set up a production line in Vietnam. These disruptions have reportedly been due to a number of variables, with some being related to the pandemic.
