Apple says it wants to help you use new apps “without revealing any new personal information” to Google, Facebook and other third-party services. And Tom Van de Wiele, Principal Security Consultant at F-Secure, thinks consumers may benefit.
A positive step, but ‘no silver bullet’
“If we take it at face value this is indeed a positive step taken by Apple to ensure that your email address doesn’t get sold off by dubious mobile app makers or the ad giants out there, including Facebook, Google and all the partners they work with,” Tom says. “But as always in security there is a trade-off to be made, and there is no silver bullet.”

“By being able to generate these aliases and using Apple as an anonymous remailer, you are locking yourself into the Apple eco-system as Apple’s services now play a critical step in you being able to log on to your mobile apps. This also means dependence; [...]"
This should be fine for games and other social apps. But Tom notes the apps you use for communications, your doorbell and other smart home appliances could also be tied into the eco-system of the world’s first trillion-dollar company.

OpenID Foundation says Sign In with Apple poses security and privacy risks

This week, however, the OpenID Foundation is questioning some of the decisions Apple made for Sign In with Apple.

In a public letter to Craig Federighi, the OpenID Foundation writes that Apple has “largely adopted” OpenID Connect for Sign In with Apple, but that there are some notable differences. The foundation argues that the differences between Sign In with Apple and OpenID Connect limit the places customers can use Sign In with Apple and poses security and privacy risks.

To resolve these issues, the OpenID Foundation is calling on Apple to close the gaps between Sign In with Apple and OpenID Connect, publicly state that Sign In with Apple is interoperable with OpenID Connect, and join the OpenID Foundation.

Sign in with Apple's ability to shield your real email address may sound clever, but one app developer claims it's just riffing on their technology. Blue Mail creator Blix has sued Apple for allegedly violating a 2017 patent on the "Share Email" feature in its app. The company claims that Apple's generation of a unique email address for sign-ins copies Blue Mail's ability to share a public email address for messaging while hiding your actual address.

It's too soon to know who will prevail. If Blix succeeds, though, Apple faces both an injunction as well as damage claims. It wouldn't necessarily have to modify Sign in with Apple, but it might have to compensate Blix to keep using the privacy-minded concept.

By using Sign in with Apple, you can log into iPhone and iPad apps just by clicking a button. You don’t have to remember new passwords, because any accounts you create become tied to your Apple ID.

Looking through the App Store’s top 200 free iPhone apps, I found just six apps that support the feature, versus 68 apps that offer sign-in buttons from other companies like Facebook and Google. Apple’s developer guidelines say that if an app supports those third-party options, it will also have to support Sign in with Apple, but so far, less than 10% of the most popular apps do.
Even for developers that want to support Sign in with Apple, implementation raises some challenges.

“It’s more of an implementation issue, and dealing with all of those complexities, than a philosophy issue,” Woloski says.
Still, he does believe that Sign in with Apple is creating some tension for developers, who on one hand want to understand more about their users and target them with relevant ads or services, and on the other are finding that their customers have become more privacy conscious.

An app developer that’s suing Apple for allegedly copying one of its features says the industry needs to speak out against what it claims are Apple’s unfair business tactics.

Blix, the developer behind the BlueMail email management app, claims that Apple not only stole its anonymous email sign-in feature with with “Sign in with Apple,” but it then “suppressed” Blix’s iPhone app in search results and kicked its macOS app out of the App Store, the Financial Times reports.

“If Apple has kicked you out of any of its App Stores, used its developer guidelines to control your innovation, hijacked your store ranking, or (let’s be honest with each other) lied to you while it steals your technology, it’s time to talk,” Blix’s Dan Volach wrote in his open letter, which is aimed at other small developers.

BlueMail Returns to Mac App Store, Developers Still Suing Apple Over Anticompetitive Behavior [Updated]

Update: Apple has shared the following statement with MacRumors, noting that BlueMail had "refused" its help and that the App Store Review Guidelines apply evenly to all developers:

Blix's mail app is currently available on the iOS App Store and they have a brand new communications app available on the Mac App Store. We have attempted on multiple occasions to assist them in getting their BlueMail app back on the Mac App Store. They have refused our help. [...]
Apple says Blix submitted a revised version of the BlueMail app late last week with an updated binary respecting Gatekeeper, leading to the app being reinstated on the Mac App Store on Monday. Apple says revised app submitted for review was different than what they previously submitted.

Back in October, the developers behind email app BlueMail sued Apple, alleging that the "Hide My Email" feature of "Sign in with Apple" infringes on its patented technology. The complaint also accuses Apple of anticompetitive behavior, including removing BlueMail from the Mac App Store.

Last week, after months of making little to no progress with Apple towards having its Mac app reinstated, BlueMail co-founders Ben Volach and Dan Volach penned an open letter to the developer community that encouraged any developers who feel that Apple has kicked them out of the App Store or otherwise treated them unfairly to reach out to them and share their stories.

Apps with sign-in functionality, including The New York Times, IFTTT, Medium, and more, have continued to adopt Apple's secure Sign in with Apple feature ahead of a deadline of June 30. The deadline for these apps to support the feature was recently extended from April 30.

The feature has been largely welcomed as a more secure alternative to similar sign-in services since it authenticates the user with Face ID or Touch ID and doesn't send personal information to app and website developers.
MacRumors forum member Pedro Marques has compiled a list of other apps currently supporting ‌Sign in with Apple‌.
