Apple has revealed Apple News+, a take on its news app that comes stuffed with magazines bundled into a subscription service.

Mags like National Geographic, Time and Vogue will be plonked in the app and wrapped up in a snazzy user interface, showcasing glossy snaps one would normally expect in mags only in a digital format.
Some 300 magazines will be available through the app, which will come in a format that both suits flicking through content on an iPhone but allows users to also dive deep into say the photo in articles.

Apple News+ is available now with the latest version of iOS in the US and Canada and will set subscribers back by $9.99. And later this year the service will come to Europe, starting with good ol' Blighty.

Apple’s premium news subscription service is off to a hot start. Two sources familiar with the company’s numbers told The New York Times that more than 200,000 people subscribed to Apple News+ in the first 48 hours of availability.
That’s more subscribers than digital magazine app Texture managed to amass at its peak. Apple, if you recall, acquired the digital magazine service for an undisclosed sum last year. It serves as the basis for the new Apple News+.

Good to see that so many people are still interested in magazines, and are willing to pay for it. I'm too used to getting news/info for free. But anyway, I was thinking that Apple TV+ is a pretty dumb name, because they already call the hardware device Apple TV, so it's getting a bit confusing.

Rod Hall, an analyst from Goldman Sachs, was critical of Apple in a research note. He said that Apple TV+ was likely to have a "material negative impact" on the company's results. He was critical of Apple's accounting methods, and warned of lower gross margins and profits, as well as impacting on average selling prices and earnings per share.

It launched in the US and Canada this March for $10 a month, with publications that include Esquire and The Wall Street Journal. In the UK and Australia, it will set subscribers back £9.99 and AU$14.99, respectively, after a month-long free trial.

And while the countries' versions feature publications the US and Canadian versions have -- such as WSJ, LA Times, National Geographic and Rolling Stone -- they also offer local titles.

Why it matters: Apple's services division has been killing it as of late and based on what we've seen of Apple TV+ thus far, that's only going to continue. If Apple can create a compelling enough bundle that saves consumers a meaningful amount of money while keeping content providers happy, it could be bad news for the competition. That's a big "if," however.

Apple is reportedly in the early stages of negotiating with major record labels with regard to bundling Apple Music and Apple TV+ into a single package deal.
Sources familiar with the matter tell the Financial Times that some labels are open to the idea but that at least one big name has expressed concern. Specifically, the label is worried that bundling may lead to decreased revenue (despite the possibility that it could also result in more overall subscriptions sold).

Apple Music currently commands $9.99 per month and Apple TV+, which is scheduled to launch on November 1, will be introduced at $4.99 per month. Bundling the two together, like Spotify and Hulu have done with their respective services, would give customers a wide range of on-demand audio and video and likely save them a few bucks per month in the process.

With a week to go before its TV service launches, Apple has brought the Apple TV app to Amazon’s streaming devices. The Apple TV app is now available on three different models of Fire TV devices — the Fire TV Stick 4K, the Fire TV Stick (2nd Gen), and the Fire TV Basic Edition — with support for more models coming soon.

The app will allow you to watch shows from Apple’s streaming service, Apple TV Plus, which will launch on November 1st. But it also has perks for non-subscribers: it’ll let you stream any movies or TV shows you’ve purchased through iTunes in the past, too. You can also watch new purchases and rentals through the app, but you’ll have to make those purchases through another device with iTunes on it. You can’t do it straight from the TV.

The streaming service will launch next Friday with nine original shows, most of which will premiere with their first three episodes, with new ones arriving weekly.

Apple is known for its billboards and television ads that boast the caliber of its iPhone cameras, but these days, the company is hawking something new — TV shows that launch Friday on its streaming service, Apple TV+.

The freebies, analysts said, represent an aggressive move by Apple to take on Netflix, Walt Disney Co., AT&T’s WarnerMedia and others in the streaming video market, where competition is getting increasingly fierce.

“They’re going pretty aggressively on the promotional side just to get people in, and they’re hoping a year from now you’ll continue to sign up,” said Evan Niu, senior technology specialist at the Motley Fool. “Apple’s very aware that they’re coming from behind in streaming video, compared to Netflix and Disney.”
Kelli Richards, a former Apple executive who is now chief executive of digital music and entertainment industry consultancy the All Access Group, said Apple’s main goal is not to become the next Netflix, but rather to draw more people to use Apple devices and stay in its software ecosystem.

Right on schedule, Apple today officially launched its long-anticipated subscription video service Apple TV+ — a handful of Apple Original shows bundled together for $4.99 per month, streaming to users in over 100 countries. But the company saved a small surprise for the last minute: the option of a $49.99 annual plan that further discounts the service for paying customers.
Uncharacteristically for the company, Apple TV+ is leaning heavily on discounts and outright giveaways to lure potential viewers to the service.

Those without a recent Apple device purchase are offered a free seven-day trial, after which a paid monthly subscription automatically begins. Users are given the opportunity to cancel at any time, which immediately terminates any remaining free service.
Additional TV shows are expected to launch over the coming months to fill out the Apple TV+ catalog, though Apple is not — for now — including any access to third-party videos as a component of the service.

The Apple TV+ service will cost $4.99 per month, but there's a seven day free trial available to everyone, and if you purchase new hardware -- iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV, or Mac -- then there's a free year waiting.

On iOS and macOS users can download videos for offline viewing, all the shows are promised in up to 4K quality with Dolby Vision HDR, plus Dolby Atmos audio for most of them. It's unclear how strictly Apple will monitor shared account streaming, but each TV+ subscription is good for use with six accounts using Family sharing, each with their own profile and preferences.

Condé Nast’s CEO still isn’t sure about the impact of Apple News Plus

Condé Nast’s CEO Roger Lynch thinks that Apple’s premium magazine service, Apple News Plus, has yet to prove itself, Variety reports.
Speaking at Recode’s Code Media conference in Los Angeles the CEO said that “the jury is out” on Apple’s $9.99 a month subscription service. Condé Nast currently provides a number of its publications through Apple News Plus, including Wired, The New Yorker, GQ, and Vogue.

Lynch’s comments suggest that it’s too early to tell whether the service has been good or bad for the publishing industry. “I hope Apple News Plus is wildly successful,” the CEO said.

“Whether it’s good for publishers like us or not is to be determined.”
However, Lynch was more clear in responding to concerns that Apple’s service could undercut existing pay-walled services, noting that “We haven’t seen that effect.”

This means that you have until Monday, December 2 to secure the extended free trial offer. “This weekend only, get a 3 month free trial of Apple News+ and enjoy full access to hundreds of magazines and leading newspapers,” Apple says on the App Store.

Furthermore, a report from Bloomberg recently said that Apple is considering bundling Apple News+, Apple TV+, and Apple Music together. This could increase the overall user base of Apple News+, depending on how low Apple could get the price of that bundle. Apple is said to have negotiated new deals with publishers in order to be able to include Apple News+ in that bundle.

That puts it as the third-most-popular streaming service in America.

The answer probably lies in the fact that Apple began giving away free subscriptions to its Apple TV Plus service to anyone who bought an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV from mid-September onwards. Given that Apple sells tens of millions of those devices a month, it’s no wonder Apple TV Plus has accumulated so many subscribers already.
However, the real test for Apple will be how many of those subscribers stay on once their year-long free subscription of Apple TV Plus comes to an end.

Carmi Zlotnik Inks Apple Deal After Starz Exit

Carmi Zlotnik has signed an exclusive producer deal at Apple TV Plus, Variety has confirmed.

The news comes days after it was announced that he would be stepping down president of programming at Starz. Zlotnik’s deal with Apple will begin next month, as he transitions from his post at the premium cabler.
Prior to Zlotnik’s time at Starz, he served as head of operations for global media at IMG, and before that, as an exec at HBO.

Zlotnik is the latest high-ranking network executive to make the jump to streaming. It was announced earlier this month that former HBO boss Richard Plepler had signed a five-year production deal with Apple through his new company, Eden Productions.
