Hackers are attempting to cash in on the record-breaking popularity of Apex Legends, according to researchers who uncovered a fake app posing as an official mobile version of the new video game.

Cyber security firm Check Point discovered what it believes to be the first malicious app of the free-to-play battle royale game, which is currently not available as a download for Android or iOS devices.

But the fake app calling itself Apex Legends is actually an adware downloader, researchers found, meaning the people behind it earn revenue through online advertisements shown to the victim. However, the researchers warn it could also be used to download malware or other more sinister content.

As discovered by ESET's malware researcher Lukas Stefanko, a fake Apex Legends application for Android is currently being peddled by multiple channels on YouTube in the form of an APK download link which has been clicked roughly 100,000 during the past five days.

Now, fake @PlayApex app spreads via YouTube video with link to actual APK that needs to be manually installed.

Scam promises Apex Legends mobile version
BleepingComputer looked into one of the scams going around on YouTube and being promoted through multiple channels and videos, with some of the videos having above 240K views at the time of this publication.

Basically, while no malware is involved in this case, the scammers will trick the Apex Legends fans to complete two of the offers by marking them as "Human Verification" and promising that "Unlocking will allow access to download "APEX LEGENDS Mobile", allowing them to collect the commissions.

Apex Legends for Android: a Fake App could Compromise your Smartphone

Yoroi-Cybaze ZLab researchers found four different fake android APKs related to Apex Legends game. All of them have been downloaded from untrusted sources available on the clearnet.

Investigating the package names, it was possible to identify many other fake applications which have spyware behavior too. So, the Apex threat is part of a bigger campaign that rides the wave of the popular games to steal information from passionate gamers, probably related to Fortnite themed samples reported by Fortinet researchers back in 2018.

Today the malware writers uses the popularity of applications that are not presents on play store to spread their malicious applications. The use of mobile devices has growth in the latest year and many users does not pay attention when downloading an app.

The researchers of Cybaze-Yoroi ZLab advise to don’t download apps from third parties store or sites and verify the presence of the legit app on the official store, as EA in this case.
