I use ninite.com to check for updates for my programs, though it doesn't quite have all of them (just the majority.)

I'll give this a shot, nice that it's portable.

"Crap" is in the eye of the beholder. Windows Updates only applies...Windows updates..and a few drivers. Otherwise, it's go to the vendor website, download, install. I might give this a try, I've been using Secunia PSI for some time now.

A hardcore Firefox user i assume? I'm sure you didn't get offended because i called "crap" Java or Flash ;) But you did see the smiley, right?
As for the updaters, i don't really need one. I have the major download sites on my bookmarks and i visit them daily, so i can not miss an update. I have tried though some of them in the past. Sumo is ok, it's a descent piece of software, FileHippo's is very week, out of around 60-65 applications i had on my system it only managed to detect ...16 o_O I too use Secunia from time to time for security purposes

What on earth has Firefox got to do with anything? I didn't get offended, period. You might think Flash is crap (and actually most do for good reason), but it's necessary crap unfortunately. Java, not so much, but, if I had a choice in the matter, I'd pick Java over Flash any day of the week. And, like I said, one person's crap is anothers' treasure.

Well, you know, because except from FF all the other ones, more or less, they're already considered "crap" by a lot of people, for one reason or another, even if they are absolutely necessary like Flash
