I saw it is not going to be allowed to update from 9 to 10 on Softpedia because version installs the Ask toolbar without user consent.

"Note to Softpedia users: We are well aware that Nero released versions 10.0.105 / 9.4.12.708 Lite. We do NOT intend to update our listing to this version, because it installs ASK Toolbar WITHOUT offering users the option to uncheck it."

It installed the Ask Toolbar even if I unchecked the respective check-boxes! :thumbd:

It is a pity. I burned hundreds of cd/dvds with Nero. I stopped using the bloated application I believe around version 6, whenever it was that the 'scout' feature cropped up. Was a great program when it was young.

I use ImgBurn now for everything I can. I also tend to use what is built into win7 at times.

With or without the Ask BS toolbar, Nero will have to seriously prove itself before I install it.

It is sad that they've stooped to the level of 'drive-by' Ask junk installation :( .Nero was the burning software a few years ago. There are plenty of good, free alternatives nowadays so Nero can be confined to the dustbin of history.

Are you sure you unchecked the boxes? The first box is checked and disabled. You can click all you want and it won't uncheck. In any case it isn't worth using because it is all just one big advertisement for the paid version once you do get it installed. I installed it in a VM yesterday. I'm glad it wasn't a live machine. What a joke. :thumbd:

A recent version of ImgBurn installed the Ask Toolbar on my machine. I'm not sure if there was a box to uncheck or not. I did uninstall it but it left some junk on the machine that I have not taken the time to delete.

The Ask toolbar showed up on one of my other machines and also hijacked my IE home page. I don't use IE but it ~ Snipped as per TOS ~.

Ask.com is using some really unscrupulous tactics in spreading that damn Toolbar. I will never, under any circumstances, use anything related to that organization.

Yes, newer versions have this, but there is a checkbox to not install it. I try hard not to use any software bundled with that sort of thing. I hate all those toolbars with a passion, a deep seated really passionate passion.

But, I will be honest, more and more applications that are really really good, such as ImgBurn, are bundling something or another, so the options slowly get narrowed down.

At this point though, if a program is truly worthy (such as ImgBurn) then I will install the stupid thing into sandboxie or worst case vmWare, let it put the stupid toolbar on, make my own copy/paste version of the program, including any reg values or dependencies that need registered. I guess I can't blame them too much, I have used a lot of freeware programs.

seen this on the windows club-
    http://techdows.com/2010/07/how-to-install-nero-10-free-version-without-ask-toolbar.html

imgburn also comes with a portable version which avoids the toolbar install issue...

the whole ask toolbar problem seems to make the ashampoo spamming a welcomed issue, and ashampoo respects user opt out of future mailings, at least for me-

filehippo is still listing nero lite 10, I thought filehippo did not list programs that included adware / forced install of unneeded 3rd party apps. This is disappointing- (no warning either)

    31mb download? Still bloatware...

I prefer to use what comes with Win7. If needed, ImgBurn is a great freeware and InfraRecorder has its source code available.
