    Hi:
I've been having a lot of problems with my computer for work lately. I deleted a lot of spyware etc. and browser hijack links but I'm not sure if it is completely free of any baddies. The problem is I installed Symantec antivirus
and for some reason I can't get it to 'activate'. I'm thinking maybe there is something still on there preventing it from doing so even though scans come back cleaned. I downloaded Symantec's SymkBfix.exe
which was supposed to fix the 'activation' problem but it is still the same and the program keeps locking up. Should I just delete it and reinstall it againo_O

    Hi again:
I forgot to mention I'm using windows98 on that computer. I'm a bit concerned with the 'critical update' portion at startup to be loaded in the registry files.
I checked the properties and it 'said' it is a microsoft
product, but it is an application and to be honest someone could have downloaded one of the ones from the email 'updates' for all I know.
Thanks in advance. Im also attaching a newer hijackthis scan i just made.

    Hi Minera,

Check the following item in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://searchbar.linksummary.com/

    Then reboot.
The Critical Update is the legitimate one.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Hi:
Thank you Pieter. I deleted the item you told me. However, after I posted last night my computer chrashed
and I had to reinstall windows. I'm not sure what caused it. I used search and destroy and removed some items. Then thinking they were the problem I restored them. They are hijacklinks to 'porn' sites and some registry changes (which was why I restored them :( ) The problem continued even after and it only worked in safe mode. It seems there was a problem with the Norton AntiVirus (the same program I had problem with at home and switched to McAffee). The popup kept saying to register and activate (which I did like zillion times)When I tried to uninstall it is when all hell broke loose and windows wouldn't load at all except in safe mode. That of course wouldn't let me delete Norton. I am not sure what the problem is. Im not sure if I should reinstall it given the problems with it. The file it was missing was a Symevent386. The Symantec folder is still there though.I am sending you a new hijack this log to see if anything else remained on this dumb thing. Thanks again.

    Download, unzip and run: CWShredder.exe
Use the Fix button and follow the instructions you will receive.

    Regards,

    Pieter
