Any good freeware software to check disk health/performance/status?

I'm using PC Wizard at the moment, but the newest version doesn't provide info about the health of the disks.
The older version would say: Drive E: 98% health 99% performance.

Anyway I want sth free, if there exists, to check occasionally my drives.
I'd like a suggestion cause googling in the dark might get me a rogue

I'm familiar with SpeedFan, but HD Tune is my thing! It provides both a benchmark (CrystalDiskMark) and disk info (CrystalDiskInfo).
I'll keep CrystalDiskInfo too for some of its advanced features.

 

Have you tried Active@ Hard Disk Monitor?

 

No, I have only tried Kill Disk - Hard Drive Eraser from Active@ and was very satisfied.

I'll try that too, it seems to be more explanatory on S.M.A.R.T. attributes!

i just tried out GSmartControl, the GUI for smartmontools, and it's really good. i got the binary from here -
