I would very much like to hear from anyone currently proficient with Gimp. I have a png file (1) and I am trying to paste an object, with a transparent background, from another png file (2) into png file (1). I have a tutorial video that takes me through this process step by step but when I apply the steps to my files it does not work. Anyone who thinks they might be able to give me a hand I would appreciate very much hearing from you. As always I would appreciate all replies and would thank you in advance.

Open both PNG files. On first (with transparent background) select option Edit - Copy Visible. Move to second file and use Edit - Paste or Paste into. It creates another pasted Layer named Floating selection.

Are you getting a message when you try to paste something like "No image data on clipboard"? For some reason I seem to have this problem occasionally with GIMP even though I can paste in other programs. I don't remember if I've had this problem in earlier versions, I'm not a frequent or knowledgeable user. It seems you're not the only one anyway.

i've tried GIMP a few times over the years and for me it's always has been one of the most unintuitive piece of software i have tried.

    i tried Paint.NET.
it is nice but lacks basic features like snap to grid or resize a selection with numerical values.
you have to eyeball it manually and hope your hand doesn't shake. ;)

I want to thank each of you for replying to my post. Special thanks to hqsec and PhantOm for providing the correct copy and paste commands. Believe me I was completely lost. The most I have ever done editing a picture file was to use the brightness and contrast so for me this was a major undertaking. Again thank you so much.

I am trying to add curved text to a path. I can do this but when I do the result is actually an outline of the text. I have tried several online tutorial instructions but none seem to work. I am using Gimp 2.8.10. Here are the steps I am taking that lead up to the outlined text:

    1. Open .png file of image I want to add curved text to
    2. Add new layer (transparency) not sure if transparency is the correct choice or not)
    3. Create path
    4. Add text
    5. High light text
    6. Select Text along path
    7. This gives me the curved text I want but it actually is an outline of the text

Does anyone know how to add color to the (outline of the text). If so, if you could give me the steps to do so I would really appreciate it very much.

I appreciate any and all replies and would thank you in advance.

i don't use GIMP but they work pretty much all the same..

have you added a fill color to your text?
i'm thinking you might only have a stroke/outline color and no fill (or transparent as fill color)...

I agree with @moontan - you should use Bucket Fill Tool and color the text. At least that was the procedure when I last used Gimp to get round text.

You should get yourself a 'copy' of this book :
    http://www.gimpbible.com/

(Once you know your way round GIMP, the interface makes perfect sense .
It's a typical windows-user complaint, they are not used to the freedom -
How do you have all your tools on a second monitor with photoshop ?)

Enigm, thank you for letting me know such a resource exists as Gimp Bible. I hate to go to the expense of purchasing the product though do to the fact I seldom use GIMP. I have viewed several online tutorials that make doing what I want look very easy. However, following the steps in these tutorials hasn't helped me. I though that I might be lucky and there might be some GIMP 2.8.10 users on the forum that would know automatically what I either am doing wrong or could provide me with the steps I need to accomplish what I am trying to do. Regardless in the meantime I will keep trying to work this out myself. The only other program I use often is PhotoFiltre. Primarily all I need to do is use the crop, and brightness tools. Oh, I didn't understand what you meant when you said "How do you have all your tools on a second monitor with photoshop?"
