I wasn't sure if I could tell AntiVir to download the latest update while logged in as a non-administrative user, but I tried, and it seemed to work. But I have to wonder if it worked completely, or if maybe there was an error that wasn't shown? Because the non-administrative user doesn't have permission to write to the AntiVir program directory.

I'm quite confident that it should have worked fine.

It works, as you have seen. The update is not performed by the logged on user but by the Scheduler service. It has admin rights and will impersonate as the logged on user when needed.
