I decided to try Antivir after all these "Good detection" reviews.
I uninstalled KAV and downloaded free version.

I was copying files from old backups
(mainly my son's game files - trainers)
to another drive and it detected
8 "viruses or unwanted programs" as it calls them
that KAV never labelled as something bad.

I'm sure that are not dangerous...

Too many false positives ? :D

Avira had a heuristic upgrade not that long ago so there wil be many false positives that need fixing. I suspect it wil only get Advanced on the retrospective test because of too many false positives.

upload them to avira as visora said and then additionally you may upload them to www.virustotal.com to see the results of scanning with 26 other AVs. :)

I get often. Actually it depends, if u download a lot u encounter false positives more. Usual surfing rarely causes false alerts.

    Hi Trans! couple of Qs.

Are these detection by heuristics or signature based?
Did u set ur Antivir to detect Extended Threat Categories?
Did u tried to upload some or all of these files to virus total one by one, just to be sure that they are really benign?
Can u please send these to heuristik2@avira.com or upload`here

    http://www.avira.com/en/support/submit_suspicious_files.html

( compress and protect with a password, pls don,t forget to mention pasword in your mesage).

    Thanks?

I downloaded free version three days ago from official site.
All settings are the default .
Heuristics as I see are set to "Medium detection level"

I will send some of the files when I find the time but
I have them some years with no ill effects...
Anyway these are files that have to do with game cheats and trainers and as I think of it again maybe it is not so important :)
I will continue with Antivir cause everything else is good about it

I am curious if u upload any one of them related to game cheats at virus total and see what other AVs say about it.

This was the worst one . It might be a malware of some sort...

I really don't mind that much about FPs anyway but for other people maybe it is a problem...

    could be, alot detected it.

but kaspersky/f-secure didnt, neither did bitdefender or nod either, and my doctor didnt either.

i doubt all those would miss it, sure one would have picked up on it.

but then again, symantec detected it and that has extremely low FP-rate.

I trust more KAV,NOD and Dr as these are what I used most the last six-seven years but you never know, things change.
I must say that I like much the way Antivir is working.
It auto-configured and you don't notice it's there for a real time scanner !:)
