Androïd smartphone - email account @gmail.com

Can I use a smartphone working with Androïd without a @gmail.com email adress ?

Otherwise, is it ok simply with a common Google Account ?

In fact, Androïd Market requires for connection and downloading a Google Account.

But I do not know if a gmail account is also necessary for this connection ?

Sorry for the lack of precision in my question. I am pretty much asking about using Androïd Market than posting emails with the phone.

 

From my experience, you need a Gmail to make it all work. When I got my Android, I created a Gmail account especially for the phone and don't use it for anything else.

I already had a main Gmail account but didn't want to associate it with anything except my email. After getting the phone up and running, I set my main Gmail to retrieve email from the phone's Gmail account. That way I get all receipts from Android Market without having to log into the phone's Gmail account.

Maybe all this is overkill but I wanted to keep things separate and have done so...
