Android Fake ID bug allows malware to impersonate trusted apps

The Bluebox Security research team has unearthed another critical Android vulnerability. Named “Fake ID,” the security bug can be used by malicious applications to impersonate specially recognized trusted apps - and get all the privileges they have - without the user being none the wiser.

"All it really takes is for an end user to choose to install this fake app, and it's pretty much game over," Forristal told Ars. "The Trojan horse payload will immediately escape the sandbox and start doing whatever evil things it feels like, for instance, stealing personal data."

Another day, another sensationalist, unfounded security story.

Dan Goodin, at Ars Technica, is writing about a security flaw in Android. It's got all the usual scary-scary language about doom and gloom, quotes from antivirus peddlers, and it wasn't long until sensationalist Apple site AppleInsider took it all one step further (relevant). So, is this a real security threat, or are we looking at sensationalism run amok?
