I wouldn't go as far as to say that AV/AM is useless. It probably still saves a lot of regular users from installing known malware on their systems. OTOH if you are under targeted attack with never-before-seen malware than it probably won't save you. But other layers of security that you set up, might help you stay protected.
This is old news, you couldn't depend on AV's like 10 years ago. But they are of course not useless, they will probably easily spot most popular malware. Expert users can rely on HIPS.
I "chuckle" when I read articles like this. Obviously, these authors are referring to the signature "only" detection products of the past. Any of today's major AV vendor products employ a range of malware detection methods of which signature detection is only one method deployed.
