I have gained the impression that Emsisoft may be on its way out. Can anyone suggest a replacement?

Everyone can suggest a replacement. Dropping the name of a favorite product while giving no qualifications for why it is suggested doesn't accomplish much. If you actually want a replacement I suggest, if possible, remove what you have, make an image, and try whatever products interest you and stick with the one you like best. Most top tier products will offer similar protection. False positives, performance, and compatibility with your device are more important considerations. Price may also be a factor.

Maybe check an article like this for ideas.

GData seems to be one people recommend when looking for an alternative for Emsisoft

I have the Emsisoft, Bitdefender, Kaspersky, and MBAM Chrome Extensions with Kaspersky Cloud Antivirus.

Alas the original poster BML has not returned to answer why he believes Emsisoft is on its way out.

Maybe they decided to stick with it and didn't want to discuss it further.
