    Hi all,

I'm not sure this is the good place to post, as my question is not exactly FW-relevant, but, don't find better place.

Some firewalls have a nice feature : to know the anoumt of bytes transfered during a specific session( like for example Kerio 4 or Outpost).
Some others doesn't have (I guess Comodo or Coreforce are not of them, which is a pity for me).

This feature is usefull for me, as it often helps me to know what will be the duration of a ftp transfer, or the time to sent a huge mail with some big attached files, or whatever.

Do you know any tool what are not FW (and not proxy either) and have this nice feature ?

    Many thanks for your help.

Maybe SmartSniff is something for you.

A sniffer is not exactly what I need.

When I need to know the transfert rate/amount of bytes transfered, for sure I use some stuff like that (etherreal).
But it's not as friendly as just a display like outpost or kerio do.
Something to provide me with those info :
    foxmail........ 20 MB out.......... 2.3 MB/s rate

    Hi Stem,

This is not exaclty what I'm looking for.

I'd like to know the amound to bytes exchanged to any kind of protocol, because sometimes I need it for POP3 or SMTP or HTTPS or SFTP/FTP, ...

I can use for example filezilla for example for ftp/sftp.
But for some reasons, last time I did a ftp transfert (was on Checkpoint site), filezilla was not working (pretty sure it was because I need to puload a file on a dir without any possibility to retrieve the dir list).
So I was using the ftp command, which was working good. But how to know when the transfert will end...

that's why I'm looking for some stuff to give me this info, if it exists.

I already checked the monitortools.com web site.
I checked it again (just to be sure...), and nothing fits y needs.

A tool like http://www.hplsoft.com/products/nstat/index.html should be helpful (don't know exactly what can be done with it, but it should be useful), but it is discontinued (and not available for xp).

Anyway, I presume I need to install a personal FW to have the feature I require.

    Hi Stem,

Didn't notice in your last post the network traffic monitor link.

It is very interesting for me, not so friendly than stats on some FWs, but when just resetting counters I can have an easily way to know the end of my ftp transfer for exemple.

The soft is a little bit buggy (the reset counters does not work all the time, but just clicking twice ot more on the button does the work, so OK).

The soft is just an exe file, without any installation process, so... maybe a very good answer Stem !

Many thanks, I will try to work with it.

    Hi gagman,

If I find anything else similar to the "Network Monitor" I will post a link.

And the author of this tool provides source code. If anybody has some delphi skills, and want to improve the soft... may the force be with him.

    Stem, you are a google-seek machine !!
But I prefer the first tool, very light, no installation, no extra feature.

I never hearded about trafmeter, it can do traffic shaping, firewalling, works standalone or as a gateway... Should be interesting.

I work now sometimes with network traffix monitor (thanks to Stem)(http://delphi.about.com/od/fullcodeprojects/l/aa112903a.htm)
which is a great tool... OK not really a great tool, but a tool which is doing its job.

    Pro :
no installation process, only an exe file
sources are available (soft written in delphi)
very usefull, as this is no easy way to know how many bytes have been transfered (mail, ftp purpose for example).

    Cons :
a bug with the clear counters button, you need to click more than one to have a real reset, but this is not a big issue.

So to sum up, keep in mind this little tool, as it should be useful in some way.

    Hi gagman,

Thanks for the update. It is always good to know there are still some good "Free" tools out there.

Maybe for the "clear counters button" bug, a report to the website/ website forum?

Maybe you should try NetLimiter, I think it will suit your needs better. They also have free version.
