I just stumblem upon this open source antivirus, which is from Netgate...

You can see screenshots here: -http://www.softpedia.com/progScreenshots/Amiti-Antivirus-Screenshot-235968.html

I didn't test it, and I never followed Netgate products, so I know nothing about their detection rates, etc., but thought someone could be interested and give it a fair trial. :D

But can I assume from the rolling eyes smiley you used that it's not the greatest or even 'famous'?

Correct. Clamav has very poor detection rates.

So, the issue is the detection rates or the engine itself, which is not adequate anymore to the current threat landscape?

The detection rate depends on AV engine and signatures.
Clamav has very poor detection rates.

Any AV which uses the Clamav engine will have the very same poor detection rates too.
    Simple as that.

I guess I'll agree with 7anon on this. Don't bother using it.

The news icon reminds me of Norton Internet Security. :D Anyway, it looks like it has a memory protection feature. Something like Comodo's? o_O

So, it's both the engine and the signatures. It could be a bad engine or poor job on the signatures side.

    OK. :)

Clam av has never been advertised to be used as your mainstream av and is a free open source on demand scanner to be used as a second opinon just like MBAM for example.

    Thanks.
