Amazon's AWS is once more increasing its presence in Europe with a new cloud computing region expected to open in Switzerland in the second half of 2022. The move will further expand the company's large footprint on the continent, with six AWS regions already active in France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Sweden and the UK, and another location launching in Spain by 2023.

Similar to other AWS regions, the new Swiss location will consist of several separated availability zones (AZs), which refer to data centers in different physical locations within a single region. The data centers in each AZ have independent power, cooling and physical security, and are connected by a low-latency network.

Amazon's CTO Werner Vogels, announcing that AWS was coming to Switzerland in a blog post, said: "[...] The upcoming AWS Europe (Zurich) Region will give our customers the choice and flexibility for where to store and process their data," he continued.

Vogels said that more than ten thousand customers in Switzerland already use AWS each month to build up their businesses, including medium-sized firms and start-ups, but also public sector organizations.

Amazon Web Services (AWS), the cloud computing arm of e-commerce major Amazon, will invest $2.77 billion in a second cloud infrastructure region in India by mid-2022, as part of its expansion plans to address the growing customer base.

The upcoming AWS Asia Pacific region in Hyderabad is part of Amazon’s continued investments in the country. AWS had launched its Asia Pacific (Mumbai) region in June, 2016 to help customers in India save costs, increase speed-to-market of new products and services, and quickly expand their geographic infrastructure footprint.

“Businesses in India are embracing cloud computing to reduce costs, increase agility, and enable rapid innovation to meet the needs of billions of customers in India and abroad," said Peter DeSantis, senior vice president of global infrastructure and customer support, AWS.

The AWS region in Hyderabad will consist of three availability zones at launch and will join the existing nine AWS regions and 26 availability zones across Asia in India, Australia, Greater China, Japan, Korea, and Singapore.
Availability zones are multiple, isolated locations within each region to reduce the risk of a single event impacting customers’ business continuity. Each availability zone has independent power, cooling, and physical security.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) plans to open a second infrastructure region in Australia in 2022, choosing Victoria as its home to develop the new hub in a move that will strengthen the state's thriving tech sector.

The AWS Asia Pacific Melbourne Region is expected to open in the second half of 2022, furthering bolstering the tech sector, which contributes $38.4 billion to the state's economy.

Amazon's new Swiss-based AWS Region is set to support 2,500 external jobs annually

While companies are announcing layoffs, Amazon has decided to launch a new AWS Region in Switzerland. For those looking for employment, the launch of the AWS Region is good news, as it’s likely to create 2,500 full-time jobs annually at external businesses in the Swiss data centre supply chain.

Aside from the new jobs that should appear, at least according to Amazon’s economic impact study, the company is also planning to invest $5.9 billion into the Swiss economy through 2036. Over the next 15 years, the AWS Europe (Zurich) Region, as it’s known, will add $16.3 billion to the Swiss GDP.

Amazon said that the $5.9 billion investment includes capital expenditures on the construction of data centres, operational expenses related to utilities and facilities costs, and the purchase of goods and services from regional businesses. The money will also support 2,500 full-time jobs annually, mainly in construction, facility maintenance, engineering, telecommunications, and jobs in the wider economy.

Amazon's cloud computing unit plans to invest €2.5bn in Spain, boost job creation

Amazon to spend $4.4b in India as it adds second AWS region

On Monday, AWS launched a new infrastructure region in Hyderabad with three availability zones, making it the second region for the datacenter clusters in India.

"The launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) Region supports India's digital transformation and is part of our long-term investment in the country since opening our first office in 2011," said AWS veep of Infrastructure Services Prasad Kalyanaraman.

The IT minister in Hyderabad's home state of Telanganga said the approximately $4.4 billion investment would strengthen the state's "position as a progressive datacenter hub in India." That $4 billion will be spent over the period stretching up to 2030, with the figure including DC construction, facilities, and labor costs as well as "purchases of goods and services from regional businesses."
India's other AWS region opened in Mumbai in June 2016.

The new region brings AWS up to 96 availability zones across 30 geographic regions. Fifteen more availability zones and five more AWS regions are in the works in Australia, Canada, Israel, New Zealand, and Thailand.
