Amazon Prime Day 2021 is nearly here. The annual shopping event begins at 12AM PT / 3AM ET on Monday, June 21st, and continues through 12AM PT / 3AM ET on Tuesday, June 22nd. Like previous years, the retail giant will use the two-day affair to discount a range of popular Amazon products, including the Echo Dot and Echo Buds, along with headphones, laptops, 4K TVs, gaming accessories, and a host of other tech.

Target Corp (TGT.N), Walmart Inc (WMT.N), Bed, Bath & Beyond (BBBY.O), Macy's Inc (M.N) and Kohl's Inc (KSS.N) are some top American retail chains offering big discounts and promotions to coincide with Prime day, which takes place on Monday and Tuesday this year.

The two-day sales event, which generated $10.4 billion in gross merchandise sales for Amazon last year, is taking place earlier than its traditional July run date, as the e-commerce giant looks to boost spending in what are historically slow sales days in the quarter.
And retailers are not missing the opportunity to get a slice of that pie.

Amazon Prime Day , which has grown into a two-day shopping bonanza rivaling the U.S. holiday shopping season, will see 20 countries participate this year. The event in India and Canada, however, has been postponed due to COVID-19.

Amazon said its Prime Day 2021 sale moved more than 250 million items and surpassed every other Prime Day event in terms of sales volume. Amazon's midsummer bargain holiday ran for 48 hours this year, and in addition to ginning up sales for Amazon and its sellers, Prime Day is also part of Amazon's overall recurring revenue strategy for adding Prime subscribers.

Amazon doesn't provide revenue or retail sales figures, but data from Adobe's Digital Economy Index indicated that the company had a big Prime Day and even boosted e-commerce sales for rivals. Overall, US retailers experienced an average online revenue lift of 143% compared to a typical June day.

In the US, online spending across retailers surpassed $11 billion over two days, compared to last year's Prime Day total online revenue of $10.4 billion, according to Adobe.

Amazon has cancelled its Prime Day marketing event in Canada this year due to the impact of COVID-19 on its operations.

The retail giant partially closed three Canadian distribution centres in Ontario in May following positive COVID tests by employees.
A company spokesman says the event was cancelled this year while "we focus on the health and safety of our employees, customers and selling partners."

Amazon previously said it was postponing 2021's Prime Day.
