Startup Standard Cognition today announced plans to open a cashierless store in San Francisco in the coming days. Named Standard Market, the store will operate with limited hours and is a testing site for Standard Cognition’s artificial intelligence that uses cameras to track the movement of shoppers throughout a store.

The news comes the same week that Amazon opened its third cashierless store in Seattle. Amazon did not respond to VentureBeat requests to comment about its future San Francisco or Chicago locations.

San Francisco appears to shaping up as a battleground in the competitive race to roll out effective cashierless store solutions.

Now that Amazon’s proven the efficacy of Go with a trio of Seattle locations, the retail giant is starting to open up its cashier-free Go stores at a steady clip.

Opening this week at 113 S Franklin St, the fourth Go store is the first to open outside of Amazon’s hometown. It’s also one of six expected to launch this year. Venture Beat notes that the store is keeping the fairly conventional weekday hours of 7AM to 8PM, though unlike other two of the other locations, it will be closed over the weekend.

A report in the Sunday Times newspaper says Amazon is currently looking to acquire a “significant number” of retail locations in the UK. These would most likely be used to bring its cashierless Amazon Go supermarkets to the British high street.

In all likelihood, however, Amazon’s effort will likely hold more product than the equivalently-sized traditional supermarket, because Amazon Go doesn’t require the installation of bulky checkout registers or self-checkout machines.

Amazon Go will be music to the ears of anyone fed up of hearing “unexpected item in bagging area.” It will appeal to anyone who has ever spent their entire lunch break queueing to pay for their meal deal.

Ultimately, Amazon hopes its cashier-less model proves convenient enough, and its food and product selection appealing enough, to draw people away from the tried-and-true chains we’ve become accustomed to.

It’s clear from the layout of the store and its upscale presentation that, at least in San Francisco, Amazon is aggressively targeting delis, cafes, casual lunch spots, and drug stores with its Go model.

Amazon might be aiming to scale up its cashier-less stores, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal, which says that the company is testing the technology in larger stores.

The WSJ says that Amazon has improved the software in those stores since they’ve opened, but apparently the technology still has trouble in those “bigger spaces with higher ceilings and more products,” according to the WSJ’s sources.

According to the report, Amazon is testing the technology in “a larger space formatted like a big store.” Those sources also say that the “most likely application” of that technology is for Whole Foods, which Amazon purchased in June 2017.
Amazon reportedly has big plans for its cashier-less stores, with plans to open as many as 3,000 by 2021.

Amazon.com Inc on Wednesday opened a compact version of its cashier-less Amazon Go food stores, broadening its footprint in the bricks-and-mortar world in a move to add shops in places such as office lobbies and hospitals.

Located in one of the company’s Seattle offices, the eighth Amazon Go store is near the original and a quarter the size, at a mere 450 square feet. That is about the size of a New York City studio apartment. The new store is aimed at selling salads and snacks to office workers.
“We wanted something from a design perspective that would fit nicely into open spaces,” Puerini said in an interview. “You can bring it in pieces and assemble it on site.”

The analysts also counted the number of visitors to an Amazon Go — an average of 550 a day — which would mean the average Go store generates an estimated $1.5 million in revenue a year excluding days when current Amazon Go stores are closed.

How Amazon Go labor costs stack up over time against traditional convenience stores and sandwich shops remains to be seen. While there are no cashiers in the tech-laden storefronts, Amazon currently employs workers to prepare sandwiches, stock shelves, and greet customers.

I detest the elimination-via-technology of lesser-skilled, lower-paid occupations. IMO it is penny-wise and dollar foolish. Bear in mind, those displaced cashiers MUST be paid one way or the other. Either we pay them for doing honorable work, or we pay them welfare.

Unfortunately, one state may have just thrown a wrench into Amazon's plans, if only slightly. As reported by The Morning Call, Philadelphia governor Tom Wolf has recently approved a bill that effectively bans the operation of cash-free retail stores (with a handful of exceptions).

It should be noted that while the state has not banned cashier-free shops, this law still directly affects Amazon and its Go stores because all payments are processed digitally - there aren't any employees to hand your money to.
On the other hand, some may argue that a cashier-free, cash-less society is the way of the future, and laws like this simply stall progress.
