What comes after CentOS? CentOS Stream, Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux? Alma? Well, I've done a short review of AlmaLinux 8.4, tested in a home setup as a potential long-term desktop operating system, covering installation and post-install setup, including extra repositories, Gnome extensions, new fonts and icons, additional software - GIMP, Steam, VLC, some other observations, and more. Take a look.

There are others in addition to Rocky and Alma out of which the Swiss based Virtuozzo (VzLinux) has a strong history and at least deserves to be considered.

They got it out in an impressive short period of time thanks to $1 million dollars in funding and work from CloudLinux developers. RHEL clones inevitably have a corporate sponsor behind them. Open source isn't always inexpensive, even if it is free.
