Soliciting feedback from users here. If you select SSH or SSL in the new Air client please let us know how it works for you. Also, not looking for "benchmarks" but an overall opinion of the performance "tap" those options cause for your connection.
I've used both, and they seem to work well enough. I've also tested obfsproxy (obfs3). However, I'm not convinced that any of those approaches obscures VPN connections very well. They all entirely obscure the content, of course. During the first 10-20 seconds, OpenVPN connections negotiate encryption for the data channel. While much of that negotiation comprises hashed/encrypted material, considerable information (such as the owner parameters in the certificate authority certificate) is plaintext. With SSH, SSL or obfsproxy, all of that information is obscured. However, none of these approaches does very much to obscure packet timing and size. And based on preliminary work, it seems entirely possible to detect the initiation of OpenVPN connections from packet timing and size alone. However, what's (potentially) possible to detect doesn't speak to what the various national firewalls can currently detect. And that's only testable by users inside those firewalls, or perhaps by using remote VPS. Also, although I haven't focused on performance, neither SSH nor SSL seemed to dramatically bog AirVPN. But in any case, I can't test performance in any meaningful way, because I'd be accessing AirVPN through other VPNs.
Thanks for your thoughts. I plan to give this a closer look in the coming weeks. I am rebuilding a linux box I messed up. Always trying new stuff with a never leave well enough alone attitude. LOL!!
