I naively hoped that everything would change for the better, but we all have dreams when we're young that get crushed as time goes by.

The next big leap in tech, which we've already seen and watched blossom, is AI. AI is neither artificial nor intelligent, no matter what the name implies. But it's here to stay — and it's going to become a more significant part of the everyday products that shape our world.

AI is used in so many ways that it boggles the mind. The food you eat gets from a field to your plate using AI. Even the grocery store may use AI to determine just how much of each product is on the shelves.

But it's also used on the phone in your hand right now, and the latest products from Amazon, as well as google's upcoming Pixel 6, lean on it in new (maybe exciting and great,) ways.

We all have used AI and were satisfied with the results because every modern mapping and navigation application uses it heavily.
It does it all because it's programmed to make decisions, and that's AI.

But we all have seen or heard about the bad side of AI, too, because of YouTube. Every time a content creator gripes about YouTube (and yes, most of the time, they have a legitimate gripe), it's because of "the algorithm" or how a video was removed when it shouldn't have been.

It's why when companies like Google and Amazon lean so heavily on AI in consumer products like Pixel phones or smart speakers, it's a little worrisome.

For example, if you buy one of the new Ring security products and choose to pay for the top-tier subscription plan, Alexa can determine if a person on your camera is someone who shouldn't be there, and it will play the sound of a guard dog barking. Google can recognize all of the faces in all of your photos (you do need to approve this in the app) and lets you search for images based on the people in them. Again, AI is doing most of the work here.

Blake Lemoine: Google fires engineer who said AI tech has feelings

Last month, Blake Lemoine went public with his theory that Google's language technology is sentient and should therefore have its "wants" respected.

Google, plus several AI experts, denied the claims and on Friday the company confirmed he had been sacked.
Mr Lemoine told the BBC he is getting legal advice, and declined to comment further.

In a statement, Google said Mr Lemoine's claims about The Language Model for Dialogue Applications (Lamda) were "wholly unfounded" and that the company worked with him for "many months" to clarify this.

"So, it's regrettable that despite lengthy engagement on this topic, Blake still chose to persistently violate clear employment and data security policies that include the need to safeguard product information," the statement said.

Mr Lemoine is not the first AI engineer to go public with claims that AI technology is becoming more conscious. Also last month, another Google employee shared similar thoughts with The Economist.

That chatbot tech is so yesterday years ago IMO. Oh they might have improved on responses and reactions programmed into them but I hate to pop their bubble but way back on Windows XP there was a fantastic program that I had myself. As it was you could tie in the webcam to it so that it pretty effectively utilized both scanning tech (motion detector) with the little boxes that recognized movement and then it began to announce several preprogrammed text files that the user self configured to say at either spontaneous motion OR set seconds. Also in tandem you could have it open audio programs sort of like an alarm system or just simply it began issuing conversations. Pretty dang good AI- I think it was called (brand-name) Chatterbox or something via voice recognition. Now im going to have to try to look way back and find that one because I long since tossed 98/XP HDD's where they were kept.

Big tech is simply incorporated after enhancing it into much larger versions like life size figures outfitted with basically the same tech from many years ago. One could also make a point as to do with Microsoft Virtual Agents from Windows 98. I also use to use them and they weren't half bad, open programs and recite your text files on command. Problem back then is that Microsoft and others was hording perfectly clear speaking voice modules and all the user could choose from was a scant few mono type voices. ELIZA and ALICE are a couple of namesakes that were in development long ago.

I use to belong to a community forum on one such bot development testing them but dang it escapes my memory the name. I have to search archives in order to remember it again. It was right there almost prime time when it suddenly broke off developments and forum was disbanded. "Hello. Are you still there?"

Google is taking reservations to talk to its supposedly-sentient chatbot

At the I/O 2022 conference this past May, Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the company would, in the coming months, gradually avail its experimental LaMDA 2 conversational AI model to select beta users. Those months have come. On Thursday, researchers at Google's AI division announced that interested users can register to explore the model as access increasingly becomes available.

Regular readers will recognize LaMDA as the supposedly sentient natural language processing (NLP) model that a Google researcher got himself fired over.
Basically, whenever you're talking to a computer, it's using NLP tech to listen.

Google's AI Test kitchen will enable beta users to experiment and explore interactions with the NLP in a controlled, presumably supervised, sandbox. Access will begin rolling out to small groups of US Android users today before spreading to iOS devices in the coming weeks. The program will offer a set of guided demos which will show users LaMDA's capabilities.

"The first demo, 'Imagine It,' lets you name a place and offers paths to explore your imagination," Tris Warkentin, Group Product Manager at Google Research, and Josh Woodward, Senior Director of Product Management for Labs at Google, wrote in a Google AI blog Thursday.

It was only a matter of time before Google stepped into the AI video arena - and that day had arrived.

The Google Research project Imagen Video (opens in new tab) is a text-to-video generator similar to Meta’s recently revealed Make-A-Video (opens in new tab) system. When prompted by the user, the tool is able to build looping video clips, and the results are as impressive as they are bizarre.

However, users eager to try out the tool will have to wait. Unlike Meta’s offering, which includes a sign-up option, the Google Research team is withholding public access for the time being, citing safeguarding issues.
