After complaints and bad press, Facebook pauses Instagram for Kids project

Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, announced today that Facebook is pausing its Instagram for Kids project and building new parental supervision tools.

Over the past few months, reports about Instagram developing an alternative for kids received a lot of bad press and some organizations criticized Facebook for this. Not only that, the Wall Street Journal published some stories about internal memos over Facebook saying how bad its app is for kids.

Early this morning, for example, a leaked memo showed that Instagram is harmful to teenage girls:

“Thirty-two percent of teen girls said that when they felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse,” the researchers said in a March 2020 slide presentation posted to Facebook’s internal message board, reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. “Comparisons on Instagram can change how young women view and describe themselves.”

Even though the project is paused, Mosseri says Instagram will continue the work to allow parents to oversee their children’s accounts by expanding these tools to teen accounts on the platform.

Facebook: Pausing “Instagram Kids” and Building Parental Supervision Tools

We believe building “Instagram Kids” is the right thing to do, but we’re pausing the work.

We’ll use this time to work with parents, experts and policymakers to demonstrate the value and need for this product.

We’ll continue to build opt-in parental supervision tools for teens.

Lawmakers called the decision ‘insufficient’

Facebook announced that it would be “pausing” work on its Instagram for kids app on Monday after weeks of growing pressure from lawmakers and advocacy groups to scrap the app. But many lawmakers aren’t satisfied with the pause, calling on Facebook to stop development entirely.

In a statement issued Monday, Democrats in the House and Senate called Facebook’s decision to halt development of the Instagram product targeted to kids under 13 as “insufficient.” Four lawmakers signed onto the statement, including Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) and Rep. Lori Trahan (D-MA),

“Facebook has completely forfeited the benefit of the doubt when it comes to protecting young people online and it must completely abandon this project,” the statement reads.

For now, Instagram chief Adam Mosseri said that the company will continue speaking with parents and safety groups before moving forward on Instagram for kids. But it’s unclear how long the announced “pause” on development will continue.

The more I think about it, it's probably indeed better that Facebook stops with this Instagram Kids stuff, it's only going to mess with these children heads on an even earlier age.
