I really wish they would cut down on resource consumption.

My Firefox always runs in the 200+Mb range, when Adblock Plus is installed.

It would be a bit of a stretch in calling Adblock Plus bloatware.

Just a bit? More like a giant sensational stretch.

I think people often forget that the lists you use and how many is more of a factor in the "bloat" (that term is used an awful lot for things) than the addon itself.

Adblock plus isn't bloat. It's the subscription lists that slow down the loading of firefox. I have adblock plus running with no subscription list and it loads up instantly. I just use hellboy firewall along with element hider and blocks everything I need. Without the bloat of the massive easylist subscription.

Feels pointless to run a fork of adblock plus. When you can uncheck the "allow some non-intrusive advertising" box in filter preferences anyway. Plus either run smaller subscription list or RegEx filter extensions like hellboy firewall and silent block.

I don't know much about how ABP works, but what does it do without a list? I was under the impression that the lists were necessary to tell it what domains to block. Or does it come with a basic list and the subscriptions add more domains?

You may also use Disconnect as a compliment to AdBlock plus.

The reason I use it is to make my own rules and hide elements that don't get blocked by hell boy firewall. Same thing like using a hosts file to block ads. The ads get blocked but the place holder still shows, so I use ad block element hider to get rid of them. Or if hell boy misses and ad (which is very few), I can use adblocker to manually add the rule.

Point is I don't use the massive easy list subscription which terribly slows down the loading of Firefox. Due to having to load it into memory.

I like to build my own lists :) If you want to hide a great number of ads, you can use a list compiled by someone else, but if you want to stop only the more obnoxious and intrusive ads, or only some advertising companies you can build your own list.
