Thanks for the instructions...I have done following

Scanned using Spybot S&D ...two times; the first time it found 7 entries, second time 3 entries...note: before contacting your forum I ran Spysweeper 2.6 (lastest version) and it found no problems; also I did install prior to running Spybot, I installed Spyware Blaster

    The problem patterns seems to be as follows;
upon first start of IE, after PC boot, I do get my expected homepage; however, if I close IE and reopen (ie. no PC reboot) I get the about:blank page plus a popup saying I am infected.

The following may be of interest, if I go to IE menu under Internet Tools and delete the cookies and all temp IE files, my regular homepage comes up

Another point of possible interest...when my regular homepage is first loaded, the url on the internet tools menu shows the about:blank address; and when the about:blank page is on screen, sometimes my regular homepage address is shown...

...hope this helps you, the Hijack This log follows:

I don't see the file we are after.

    Please tryn this:
First make sure Windows and IE are fully updated.

    Download and unzip: http://www.rokop-security.de/main/download.php?op=getit&lid=59
Then close as many programs as possible and click *Desinfektion starten*

Your computer wil reboot and start with the same program.
Close it and run HijackThis again. Post the new log.
There will be some more left to do.

    Regards,

    Pieter

Pieter ...thank you for the response ...I did get the file you requested, after I Started Disinfect nothing happened? ....I waited about 15 minutes and then closed program ....do I need to wait longer or is something at work which is preventing the program from working?

ps...I assume the PC will reboot by itself upon Start Disinfect (or I am supposed to reboot?)

    Thanks again ....awaiting your reply

Apparently the program is looking for something we couldn't find either.
The reboot, when you are infected, is almost instantenious.

Run start.bat again and choose option '2'. You must reboot after doing so.

Then download and run AdAware : http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/ (make sure you have latest updates) and run it.

Did we mention to check if Windows and IE are fully updated?

    Regards,

    Pieter

Thank for response ...fyi...I have updated IE and windows

Also, I am not an expert on PC ...where is the start.bat file you asked me to run? Is it part of the sphfix107.zip file I downloaded? Or part of windows system?

Also, I have downloaded Adware; however, not run it yet. Do I need to run the start.bat file first as you requeste?

Also, a new twist this morning when I booted my PC and opened IE. In past I have gotten my specificed homepage first (and upon closing and reopening IE I get about:blank and popup ad) -this morning I got the popup ad without opening the IE and when I opened IE it opened up the MSN homepage. ...this may be useful for your troubleshooting.

Thanks for patience -awaiting your reply.

File after running dllfix.exe (start.bat) and Adware...note Adware find 18 objects that I deleted ...a copy of the dllfix.exe report follows the hijack log

Status report: After doing the above...I did open IE, close it and reopen IE to see if the about:black page shows up upon reopening ...it did ...I guess that means we have more to do? Hope the following helps ...again, many thanks, I am learning how complex this stuff is...

    Hi Big J,

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINNT\system32\nennbb.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINNT\system32\nennbb.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINNT\system32\nennbb.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINNT\system32\nennbb.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINNT\system32\nennbb.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINNT\system32\nennbb.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AF158933-8F69-4A50-98E5-FB3379CFFFB3} - C:\WINNT\system32\nennbb.dll

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Configuration Loader] file.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateCmd32] c:\winnt\system32\SVHOST.EXE

    O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Then reboot into safe mode and delete:
    c:\winnt\system32\SVHOST.EXE
    file.exe

Then do an online virusscan. I noticed you used Symantec's before, so it would be fastest to use it again.

    Regards,

    Pieter

Pieter ...it looks like you did it, when I reopen IE after closing it the adware about:blank does not popup...also, I checked my hotmail account and the popup did not appear...hope this is it ...if it I notice any funny behaviour I will advise

    Many, many thanks...truly an expert.

I have included last hijack this log...if it prompts any questions let me know...also, if I tap into your expertise...to prevent this and fix fast ...also I have saved the System Registry -used microsoft backup wizard and make emergency repair disk post repair...is there anything else I should be doingo_O (ie. I run spyware regularly and update antivirus weekly...also all WIN critical patches.) further, do I need to replace the svhost.exe file deleted with a clean version? (ie. is it critical for some applications?)

Again thanks for your expertise and patience.

Your log is clean now. Good job.

Please read How did this happen and can I prevent it?

svhost.exe does not need to be replaced. It was a virus mimicking a important system file called svchost.exe, which you still have.

    Regards,

    Pieter

Pieter...thanks for reply...again much appreciated your expertise on this and your forward of information to prevent this from happening again...since, last evening the PC continues to work fine ...actually, it seems faster, however, a last point if you have time to comment

When I run Spybot ...I get the following entries...these entries re DSO exploit where also present after the last fix (note before the fix there were three entries so it the fix can rid of one)

In the past I have checked this to be fixed; however, it seems to come back...it is something of concern? is it needed to operate other things?

    Thanks again

Pieter ...a followup to the About:blank fix you helped me with...the PC is running great...the Adware and Spysweeper sofware I run has caught a couple of other popups-also Spyboot is running; hopefully with them and other security issues you advised me to look into I can keep the system clean.

    Again...thanks, for your help.

Pieter...it's been a few weeks since we last communicated ....I may have a problem? ...my service provider sympatico.ca has aligned with msn ...not this this shoud matter; however, I had an incident of about:blank page returning...

I ran adware (updated to current version) and then ran spyboot and then hijackthis ...the log follows

I have a couple of questions to tap your expertise
    1. Does the log show anything of concern?
    2. My spyblaster software no longer works...error message about a bad file or virus...I removed it and tried to reload it...however, I get the same error message...any thoughts? ideas?

Further, the about:blank page did not return after running adware and spybot; however, I wonder if something is working in background...I await your input...PS...I followed all instructions from last time to prevent this...I thought the software such as spybot prevents such virus from attaching...Have I got this wrong?

    Thanks

Pieter ...this log is further to the one I sent about 8:00 pm...after my last post I followed a thread in the spywareblaster 3.1 damaged forum ...it mentioned 'post number 60 by Jack Attack' -that referred me to a german site in which a fix software was available...I downloaded and ran it ...now spyware bastler loads and I ran it ...also, ran spysweeper software I have installed...

..the hijack-log after the above clean-up looks as follows; how does it look?
    Any concerns...look clean?

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Big J,

Good to hear you found the Rokop program and that it worked for you.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = file://C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = file://C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = file://C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = file://C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html

    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Configuration Loader] file.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpyKiller] C:\Program Files\SpyKiller\spykiller.exe /startup

Then reboot and see if you can find file.exe
Let me know where and what it says under Properties.

The programs we advise do help, but the most important part is watch what you download and install, obviously first making sure your permission is needed to install something at all.

As you have noticed first hand. CWS finds SpywareBlaster enough of a nuisance to directly attack it.

    Regards,

    Pieter

Pieter ...your prompt reply is much appreciated ....I followed your instructions regarding the HiJack This files you wanted fixed...I then tried to find the file.exe file....I could not find it (using the file search menu of Windows)...is this good or bad? ...if I need to find it, is there another way to locate it?

Also, fyi ...I have posted the log after the fix and rebooting of PC...how does it look?

    Thanks ...awaiting your response....
