I know i know Wild B. I know with the personal edition that my polka-dotted shorts are just fine :)

As for your number one - that was the point of my post - in that we're all a tad tight on holding people to (precisley) what they say IMO - because we don't know whats going on their end. I did just see tonight they had to upgrade servers etc.

#2 - Are we even comparing apples to apples? I simply don't know, though i think not. I do know that some of the varients of nasties who's signature updates appear day to day are so "out there" that they are only a threat if you are downloading via p2p illegally, on a 386dx, no firewall, while standing on your head, viewing porn via a particular dialer which only becomes active on 3d full moon each year. (heavy heavy sarcasm in playful spirit)

#3 - Yes :D Yes its ok. Hey My glass is "half full" only a couple times a week - So i share ;)

OH! Glad I went back and read the posts before, because I thought maybe your glass was full quite a bit, toadbee!

Sorry, just didn't expect to read about polka dot shorts, here! (muffling laughter)

I'll come back later, or send Wildman! :D

coming late into the discussion... I have a question.
A2's heuristics were better than Norton's back in 2004 june-ish [NAV 2003]... at least that's what I found... 7 old malware and 2 new were caught by a2 and not norton... and when A2 updated, those 2 were COMPLETELY removed... admittedly that's a very small and one-off experience I'm basing THIS particular opinion on... buit the two worms [goddamn it, I can't remember there true names] were NOT detected by BloodHound, but by a2.
So... what about the heuristics today? and tomorrow? [I'm talking about the FREE version here - on demand scans only]

:) I don't know, an to me not that much of a big deal, but it on average is still taking around an hour to complete the scan. I use the FREE version, so do not get the actual scan time, I have selected to scan my entire C: drive an have checked all the available options. I have a 430gb hard drive 87% of which is indicated as being free. I have a 32mb memory board with a 128mb memory expansion board having been installed. I use Windows 98.

When the scan first starts it goes rather fast an then slows down as it progresses, it does scan the archives and I notice this seems to be where it slows down. As I said not that big of a deal to me as I run this once a week, an let it go while I am eating dinner, by the time I get back to the computer it is nearly completed. I await version 1.7, an will see if that make a difference or not.

    Thanks
    Wildman

So the free version (No IDS) is not going to be up to date most of the time.
Sounds like Ewido is the better of these 2 free scanners then.

o_O It appears as if Ewido does not work with Windows 98, does anyone know if this is correct or not?

    Thanks

I am afraid not Wildman, this is a little snippet from the Ewido site-

Does the ewido security suite work under Windows 95, 98 and Me?

Unfortunately the ewido security suite only works with Windows 2000 and XP as it was developed to use many of the features introduced with Windows 2000. Also we currently can't and most likely won't provide a version for older Windows versions in future.

That is correct, it works with Windows 2000 and XP only...

The heuristic used by a² v1 is mainly for detecting dialers. The version 2 engine has heuristic detections for other kinds of malware and has memory heuristics included, too. But its still quite untested.

    Nice thread.
Good humoured and good participation with useful info and extra knowledge with a bit of ," How to be a good human being", thrown in.

    I love it here :D

Wildman; did I read your post right: 430GB hard drive!!!

You keeping secret files on us?
Plenty of room for all kinds of cooties in there!
You better be running a big fence around that paddock.

#1- I eagerly look forward to version 2. I just wish that Andreas had a twin brother so he could go twice as fast. ;)

#2- When I first installed a² Personal, I noted that the Guard challenged *certain ones* of my computer's applications, but not others. I'm sure that there is some logic behind this, but I am unable to discern what it is. Any theories? (Just curious)

P.S. I have noted that a² absolutely detests the fact that Trojan Remover changes the name of its .exe file every time it executes. Moreover, a² absolutely refuses to ignore TR's behavior. So much so that I have to disable a²'s guard in order to run TR. Not a big deal. Eccentricities merely add to a²'s mystique, wot?

    Bellgamin - my thoughts:

Well therein lies the beauty of A2. The IDS is looking at these programs hueristically - or looking for specific behavior before it jumps. So it's really very "smart", as opposed to "Dumb" IDS's that jump at everything you run. I know firefox causes an alert as possible backdoor etc. Don't know why - other than it must exhibit typical backdoor behavior at some point :)

Well the exclusions are based on MD5 checksums - and when TR changes its name - I'm sure the MD5 checksum changes. It is a new and different program as far as a2 is concerned.

Good point Bellgamin, if they had more developers for the main program/scanner development would go much more quickly.

In response to an earlier post in this thread by you Andreas stated they they plan to have weekly updates. Apparently this hasn't happened yet.

Also, I don't know why people get so upset or disappointed with late updates to a particular program. I kinda have come to expect it. My favorite game of all time Metal Gear Solid 3 was pushed back I believe several months before its final release. I just believe this to be typical software development. I'd rather have a complete, bug free program than to have it right now and have many problems.
