The hard drive on my old Thinkpad died so I'm shopping for a laptop. One ad reads, "8GB RAM (4GB INTEGRATED, 4GB IN THE SLOT)"

    Can someone please explain?

it has a 4gb non-removable, integrated ram plus a removable 4gb ram module in the slot.

I understand. Thanks for the info.

So it has a total of 8GB live, active, usable RAM, correct? But why does the ad see the need to disclose that nitty-gritty fact? If the ad merely said, "8GB RAM," & didn't mention that it has 4GB integrated & 4GB in the slot, why should omission of that fact bother anyone?

correct. the ad mentions that fact to let you know that it's not upgradeable.

Yes one is soldered to the motherboard. The other one might be upgradable. I have seen one with 8GB soldered and the other one accepted a 16GB module max for a total of 24GB. Though you don't have dual channel benefits unless both are the same size afaik.
