Hi, searched a bit but still can't find a recent list of AVs that work well over a 56kb modem-esp. with small updates. Don't want one that never manages to update itself before the next update rolls out. Shouldn't affect web surfing speed much while updating. Naturally, top-notch protection desired, so forget about AVs that fall low on vb100's rap chart.

Webroot and Panda or any cloud AV would take up a portion of the bandwidth constantly, so they might not be suitable in this case

Maybe you should consider using antiviruses that offers offline updates which you can download from another machine that isn't restricted on bandwidth and manually apply on your machine.

F-Prot is the best bet, cloud solutions are NOT the best bet with bandwidth limitations. So that eliminates Webroot. Kingsoft and Panda.

Dr.Web used to have pretty small updates back in the day. I'm not sure how that is now.

There is no constant connection to the cloud required with WSA, and the bandwidth used is very low compared to signature updates.

Wow dial up, i really thought i was one of the DSL/Cable late adopters. :D
Maybe you could try an AV-less setup and then have a good AV for On-Demand scans.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Small updates of only the most prominent malware, and hitman pro on-demand scans.

I'd go with Avast. It even has a dial up option under updates in settings.

Anti-Malware / Malware, Malware = Broad range including Anti-Virus. You could be surprised to know MBAM is the top performer in rogue/spy-ware detection and out-performs many normal Anti-Virus programs, hence why youtube testers use it to do after checks.
