Hmmm ... I'm still not convinced enough to install an AV on Ubuntu. I bet a lot of the malware was aimed at servers. Although Apple seem to be on the ball.
It's kind of hard to believe though that crooks really developed 70 million new malware samples for Windows. I'm guessing it's mostly repackaging of certain groups of malware. It smells a bit like FUD to me.
It's primarily polymorphic malware: https://digitalguardian.com/blog/wh...actices-defending-against-polymorphic-malware that is the source for these high numbers.
No surprise to long time Windows user's. The trouble is, there is a new generation of Windows user's nowhere near savvy as the seasoned one's, and therein is a whole massive pool of those who believe they're just happy-go-lucky safe with either a commercial AV, another recommended, or more often than not MS only built-in is fine as wine and nothing to worry about. Those Windows user's are especially the one's who will get fully sifted or worse.
Yes, that what I meant. I performed a search and this site has identified 2684 malware families, so those 70 million new samples are most likely malware samples that have been altered in order to make it harder for AV's to detect. That's what I meant with FUD, they don't even bother to explain this. Actually, these malware families aren't all for Windows, but also for Android, Linux and macOS. https://malpedia.caad.fkie.fraunhofer.de/families
