This looks a lot like trolling. CDs were invented in the 1970s and were first used in computers in 1985. It's completely unreasonable to expect modern software to use the same old mediums forever. If it fits on a DVD then that is considered small by today's standards. I'm certain that we'll look back in ten years (maybe even 5) and marvel at how small the storage size of DVDs was.

That's why I now prefer asking my questions in specific forums rather than in general ones.

I explained how I used the term. As for others colloquial usage, that's irrelevant here.

Trolling? Are you negating the existence of people using old rigs with CD-Drives?

Xubuntu being an OS which claims to aim at older hardware used to have that people in mind IMO.

    Something is changing here.

It's all irrelevant. That's the issue. I can just as easily mean that 'heavy' means it's using a lot of red.

I'll sound like an idiot though because no one actually thinks that, but I'm not wrong.

Or you can, if doubts and confusion arise, just explain your usage.

I don't think it would change much.

That's why I use words with a trusted dictionary one click away, which means I don't invent meanings.

FYI things have been changing with Xubuntu.

They made a decision last month that it was taking too much developer effort to try and fit everything on a CD.

    http://xubuntu.org/news/xubuntu-goes-1gb-for-raring-gimp-and-gnumeric-are-back/

Xubuntu dropped support for non-pae kernels in 12.10, so I think it just gradual progress is supporting more modern machines, dropping support for the oldest due to limited resources and this was announced at the 12.04 release (http://xubuntu.org/news/12-04-release/).

Thanks for the links, interesting info. Not sure if this is a good move.

what? No. I have an old rig and use it all the time. I just don't expect Ubuntu 13.04 to run on it. Xubuntu is for older hardware, but not for ALL old hardware.

Perhaps you and I have opposing viewpoints on what Linux is. I think it can be installed on virtually anything with a hard drive given enough knowledge, patience, and ingenuity on my part. Seems like you expect all Linux distros to be backwards compatible indefinitely.

    right you are.
Xubuntu uses well over 300 megs of RAM.

so i would not recommend using it unless someone has a minimum of 1 GB of RAM.
which is still pretty damn good because Windows 7 & 8 require 2 GB of RAM for normal usage.

Xubuntu 13.04 in a VM is using 225mb for me after logging into XFCE.

    Cheers, Nick.

i was gonna download it and try it but by reading this thread i noticed i already did that. lol

i can't remember why i decided to stick with Mint XFCE instead of Xubuntu.
maybe just because Mint is a bigger organization than the Xubuntu team.

anyway, one thing i do remember that i liked about Xubuntu is the ability to customize what items appear on the 'Start' menu via the control panel.
i think it has a built in conky manager as well.

but it's more than a week ago so i've forgotten most of that already. lol
