Im doing a system scan and notice a lot of files show that they are "locked". Why is this? Does this mean that nod32 cant check if theres a virus in a locked folder or file?

I would merely add that it's normal for any other AV, they just don't show error messages and list the number of unaccessible files in the result window after a scan has completed.

And there should be an option to supress the showing of these locked files. Hopefully there will be in future versions of Nod32.

Last night, I downloaded "Eset NOD32 v2.5 Trial Version", not to buy it later, but I was curious how many threats NOD32 would find on my computer (I use only AVG Free as AV scanner).
NOD32 didn't find anything, so my computer is OK.

I saw these "error opening (File locked) [4]" also and I found these messages very confusing.
They are NORMAL indeed, but you don't use the word "ERROR" when something is normal.
Each ignorant user would be worried after seeing these messages.
Experts don't have a problem with that, but typical users get confused and this topic and the other topic proves it.

I don't mind that these records are mentioned during the scan, but the message should be more reassuring, than alarming and that should be very easy to change in the NOD32 program.

Other solutions are NOT showing these records at all or a switch for "showing/not showing" these records.
I would prefer the switch and the switch should be OFF by default, so that typical users don't see these records from the beginning.
When the typical user is more familiar with NOD32, he can decide to leave the switch OFF or to turn the switch ON.
Whatever the solution may be, the message needs to be changed in something more reassuring.

Thanks for the responses. I would like in the future to see the ability to not show locked files. It would make me feel better not seeing the word "error" in there. Kinda freaks me out a bit :p

Sorry it took soo long to reply. I guess I didnt have email notification on, so I didnt think anyone responded.

I just read the messages on locked files while scanning with NOD32. I get dozens of these everytime I scan and was worried about them and how to get rid of them. I'm glad to hear that they are normal and I shouldn't do anything about them :D.

I agree with the others, ESET should make an option available to not list these; the program is difficult enough to run as it is. It's the same old story; programmers write for themselves not for users. They should send beta's to NON-TECHNICAL users and ask for suggestions. I'm sure they would get a lot!

It's quite dangerous not to list such files. For a programmer it's not a problem to lock files, so you should always keep an eye on what files could not be scanned.

    Edit:
Sorry for this post, I didn't realize I was posting to an old thread I found through Google. LOL :))

Hey, it's quite alright. At least now we have an explanation of why they are not hidden.

    Google. LMAO. :p

Might there be a way for us not so Advanced users of Nod32 to also take advantage of this file is locked feature. I mean I never ever look at the locked files cuz there are way too many of them.

But I would look if it only showed new files. For instance I could highlight the locked files and right click and select something like do not show these files anymore untill changed etc.

Just trying to use my common sense - how would it be possible to get information about a file that is locked?

Acronis TI is backing up those locked files. So why wouldn't it be possible to scan?

maybe I read it wrong - but NOD32 reports the name of the file as locked - I think the suggest would be to be able to right-click on the filename and tell nod32 - "this file is ok - don't tell me about it again" - if the filename is known, adding it to an exclusion list, or a list of files that are ok to be locked should be possible.... I guess the "until changed" part might be a little more complex...

Exactly - I as a more casuall user would prob notice and look at 5 or less files in that locked list but as it is now its more or less 100. For instance about 30 of those are SpyBot SnD files that it I think are ok and therefore dont wish to see again.

1 - So yes to be able to right click and select "These files are OK hide untill changed" would be wonderfull for the average user. Or something of the sort.

2 - But also an option to supress these locked files always ( not on by default ). For ppl like my mother for instance who otherwise asks all kinds of unnecessary questions. But that has been suggested before.

( posted the following suggestion on the future changes page )
