I am what would be considered a newbie. I ran my NOD32 scan and after every file I got a message that said "error file locked [4]." Is my scanner running properly?

I think I read that it's windows locked programs that in no way can be touched, therefore can no way be infected.

Careful ! Telling a newbie to use BlackSpears settings . good settings but , may cause a newbie some headaches . And Wolf .
Locked files are normal . Only a few though . You make it sound like all of them . 4-12 is about normal .

U indicated in your first post the message, "error file locked [4]."

So i take it there are 4 files locked only?

If so, this is normal. That's how many are locked when i do a scan too.

I took a quick look at my last virus scan log. Here are the locked files I see, with explanations as to what they are...
    • C:\hiberfil.sys -- file used by Windows for hibernation
    • C:\pagefile.sys -- Windows swap file
    • C:\Documents and Settings\username\NTUSER.DAT (various) -- the user sections of the registry
    • C:\Documents and Settings\username\ntuser.dat.LOG (various) -- the user sections of the registry
    • C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\EventCache\{159414D6-00E4-4BC7-9F41-F526FFF8C18F}.bin -- associated with Windows Update and Automatic Updates
    • C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\EventCache\{DD6EF594-6426-47D6-829D-22D1E19AC475}.bin -- associated with Windows Update and Automatic Updates
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\edb.log -- associated with Windows Update and Automatic Updates or System Restore
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\tmp.edb -- associated with Windows Update and Automatic Updates or System Restore
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\... (various) -- Windows registry
It is normal for all of these files to be locked. Are you having questions about any other files, in particular?

Is there a way that I can post the results of a NOD32 scan here so you can see what I'm looking at? And thanks for the welcome. Happy Easter to all

You can right-click on the scan results and say "Copy all", then paste them here.
