Not that I doubt these guys have a lot of info, but that opening example is just ridiculous.

Sweepstakes and contests are the granddaddy of all marketing ploys. That was exactly how companies were gathering this kind of data decades before the Internet age. This guy readily admits he "loves that stuff"...as in, he freely puts virtually all that information onto forms and sends them off to marketing firms himself.

And we're supposed to be shocked when those very companies know all that information about him? I guarantee there are lines on those forms for income, marital status, and interests and hobbies (not to mention, the interests and hobbies that can be discerned from what contests he's entering.)

    Give me a break.

The cool part is that Acxiom plans to allow people, suitably authenticated, to correct errors in their profiles. No?

They're only by getting out ahead of the mandates and doing it themselves. The new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau head has already made it clear these data companies will have to be held accountable for bad or false information in their files.

Their free ride is over - Axciom is just smart to get out in front of the story and make themselves look like they're "taking care of the folks." Right.

The only reliable solution is having multiple digital personae that aren't readily (if at all) linkable.
