My computer restarts for no known reason, sometimes a few times per day.

I've updated my anti-virus and run it... says I'm clean.
I've went on other virus-detection company sites and run their free virus scan, they say I'm clean as well.

I was sure it was the highly publicized sasser, even ran the symantec removal tool... it says it doesn't find it on my computer.

And still, my computer re-starts once in a while... it's mostly just annoying but when I'm working on something and can't save my work it's very aggravating.

I've also run Spybot, Ad-Aware... nothing.
I don't know what else to do.

Anyone have any idea what the problem could potentially be and how I could fix this?

Here is my Hijackthis log, thanks in advance.

I've frequently found that Ram manager programs like Ram Idle actually cause reboots and problems with XP as it can prevent XP handling virtual memory

So I should just uninstall Ram Idle?...

I installed it a few weeks back because my computer was starting to get slower than usual... even after closing some programs the memory isn't recovered.

I end up having to restart the computer to roll at normal speed again.

Anything I can do to solve that problem?... I have to admit that Ram Idle didn't seem to help the situation much.

try a good clean up and see if it helps

Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

    Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
    AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

    Run Sybot S&D

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

    then reboot &

    Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least 01R310 23.05.2004 or a higher number/later date

    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

    reboot again

boot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

then using windows explorer go to C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Local Settings\Temp and select everything in that folder and delete it

C:\windows\Temp and select everything in that folder and delete it, except temporary internet files, cookies & history folders

as XP will not let you delete files less than 24 hours old as it thinks it might need them please also do this

while in the temp folder, select view and select details.

then right click a blank part and select arrange icons by, and select show in groups and modified, that will give a list of all files in date order with today at the top of the page.

select all the files/folders except the today ones and delete them all.

    1) Open Control Panel
    2) Click on Internet Options
    3) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
    4) You may also want to check the box "Delete all offline content"
    5) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the temporary internet files
    6) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that websites have placed on your hard drive

Ok after all that, my computer crashed again.

This time it just crashed instead of restarting since I had disabled the feature in XP that had Windows restart if an error occured.

Instead of restarting without giving me a clue what the problem was, the computer crashed and a blue screen appeared telling me the problem was with c:/windows/system32/smtcpmon.sys

It said "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA"... whatever that means.

After a quick serach on the net, I found it's part of the SecretMaker program I use, an all-in-one spam, banner, popup, and cookie blocker.
It sent me to some message boards where people seemed to be discussing the problem but it was in dutch or german so I don't have a clue what they say.

Anyway, I'm guessing I'll just have to uninstall SecretMaker and all will be well... I'm now in need for a good free banner/popup software if anyone has any suggestions.

If you have a link to the dutch or german message board, I am fluent in both and could check if they came up with a solution.

Well I'm assuming it's dutch or german... I could very well be wrong:

    http://www.computerpech.nl/forum/index.php?page=view&cat_id=6&sub_cat=1&threadid=631

    http://www.spywarefri.dk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2551

Just do ctrl-F and search for "smtcpmon.sys" since that was the file that cause my last crash... it'll save you from reading through the whole thread.

Thanks for taking the time, although I'll feel really stupid if neither of those links are dutch or german... hehe, it wouldn't surprise me

    Hi G Man,

Well. One of them was Dutch and the other Danish (which I can understand as long as they talk about computers ;) )
If necessary I can ask FBJ (who is a Mod at that Danish forum and a Member here to help out)

Before you start, please unzip hijackthis to a separate folder. The program will make backups in the folder in the folder it's in.
These easily get lost in a Temp folder.

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = C:\Program Files\Copernic Agent\Web\SearchBar.htm
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/ie/defaults/sp/ymsgr/*http://www.yahoo.com

Then click Start > Run > type services.msc > OK
In the list of services find secretmaker TCP monitoring driver
Rightclick that line and choose properties. Set the StartupType to Disabled using the Dropdown box.

Then reboot into safe mode and delete:
    C:\Program Files\MyWay <= entire folder

It may be necessary to reinstall Secretmaker if you want to continue using it.
