Hmm. Nowhere on the info page do I see "removal" mentioned, only detection.

Free removal doesn't sell licenses after all.

If it can scan a 1-2TB hard drive in 60 seconds then it could be pretty handy.

Ooooh, gotta disagree with that one!
Eset provide free online scanning/disinfection yet still remain one of the market leaders in license sales.
Mainly because the majority of people want, and are willing to pay for, real time 'babysitting' protection.

Good point. I retract my statement.

The current market share leaders in the AV industry all employ methods such as this to boost their products popularity by the looks of things.

so, it only scans active processes for active malwares. nothing to surprise, other antiviruses already have flash/quick/active running/critical area scano_O

I took closer to 2min for me, and I have a lot less data than that.

Nice benchmarking tool, my system was scanned in 27.1 seconds, should be easy to beat (E5200 low spec dual core with no real time security), so what is your score ? :D

According to Eset's website, it says " one time " scanner, I assume this means, if you've used it previously, you don't get another scan. Anyone tried this ? http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/

Didn't they use to have something similar, but as browsers extensions instead?

I won't try it, I read that it shows ads for tune-up software, and communicates with the server through unsecure connection. The downloadable executable is only 156KB, but downloads an 11MB installer, install size is 25MB before the scan, and there is more than 50MB on the HDD after the scan, and the uninstaller leaves quite a few remnants.

I have used it in the past, it is not a one-time scanner and it keeps the virus-definitions so it can do a faster incremental update last time.(At least for the download version, I think the online version uses Java or ActiveX, if you don't have it/use different browser it will offer a small downloadable version.)

It doesn't scan your hard drive, only active processes.

Bitdefender is already included in HMP, so I don't really see a reason to use this over that.

True. Scanning with HMP is also free as long as you don't need to remove any malware and even then you can choose not to remove it and use another scanner to remove the malware.

Slows browsing for me. Plus I thought I read about a lot of privacy issues with it.

Where do you see that? No mention of it here:
    http://www.eset.com/home/products/online-scanner/
It links to the same installer it used to and I just checked the program which also does not mention 1 time scan and I just tried a quick RAM only scan, quit the program and start it again and I could scan again no problem.

    EDIT:I just found it:
    http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/
But it links to the same installer mentioned in my post. I think the wording is put that way to make very clear that it does not provide continuous realtime protection. Just you run it, it scans 1 time and that's it, but that of course doesn't mean you can't run it again to scan a 2nd, 3rd etc time.

It took over 5 minutes to run a scan on my laptop.

Then it informed me that it had found serious problems due to:
    • No antivirus installed (I'll install one, one day...)
    • Antispyware is turned off (I have Windows Defender disabled due to occasional high CPU use)
    • UAC is off (I hate it)

However no threats were found, which is what I expected. It did want me to install Bitdefender, but I'll pass that out and stay with no antivirus for now.
