unfortunately, we have been sold a dummy. This version is i think is one of the earliest build of NAV.I had done a full update after installation and it updated the definition files and also a product update.

Today when i decided to update it, to my horror it showed that 230mb needs to be downloaded....when you could download 2 full installers of NIS within that package.

Then i did a bit of research and found out that in june a new product update was launched...maybe that is causing it?!

Older builds will update to the latest by running LiveUpdate. It should be a one-time thing. The first time the virus definitions are updates it will also be a big download (even bigger if you disable Smart Definitions), but updates after that should be small.

When I updated it, right after install, it downloaded ~70 MB of data. Later, when I disabled Smart definitions, it downloaded additional ~120 MB of data. Maybe that's the problem -program update plus all definitions?

Might be the case....as i always do manual update, never had such issues with other top line av's.
Have switched to mse, till 2013 version comes around...

The account is for managing the license, it's not used by Symantec for spamming. There's no downside AFAICT.

I wasn't talking about spamming. As I have read from others, this licence is for new users only. So you can't activate it with old account as described here:

    http://technojourney.com/freebies/norton-antivirus-2012-product-key-free-download/

I haven't tested activation with old account, so I can't say what happens if you try it.
