I'm ready to start fresh with a new webmail provider. No Gmail and no social-ready providers. I want email for email - nothing else.

I looked over some past threads but they included some providers that no longer exist or have been bought up by bigger players. I also would like something that is more than a re-brand of SquirrelMail.

I'd be willing to pay up to $50 a year for a good provider.

Oh, for users of Fastmail, since FM is now owned by Opera, has the service improved? I never liked the "old" Fastmail's confusing and cumbersome interface and customer service was always a pain. I paid for 2 years and gave up on them - but that's been a few years ago before the Opera takeover.

Suggestions for a new Webmail provider in 2012 --- and why?

    Thanks as always!

I do a similar thing. I use my ISP email account with Thunderbird and I too can go to their website to check my mail if I'm away.

That's what I have for my business site. But I have all my email forwarded to my gmail account as it's easier to access. I've noticed that a person either needs to essentially turn their spam filter off from the original email address or check that email regularly as some legit email never gets forwarded.

    My recommendation as well.
For around $26/yr: unlimited aliases @yourdomain.com, IMAP email hosting w/ static web site, 10GB online storage.

FM is working on a new Webmail interface rewritten in AJAX. It's in beta but can be used by customers. It's lightening fast. It's being updated regularly. It can group conversations similar to Gmail.

    https://beta.fastmail.fm/

I can't say if service has improved as I just recently signed up with a cheap Ad free account to test FM out. But I can say that the new beta Webmail is very nice and fast. It will be great when their finished with it.

I have all that. I have hosting, email with a zillion filters (and then forwarded to my central webmail.) It's that central webmail I'm looking at changing. The webmail available to install on your own server, or provided by the host, is just not robust (or pretty) enough. There is nothing uglier than Squirrelmail. I've also used RoundCube on my server and it was very buggy. I love having my own email addresses to forward - but I don't want to maintain the software. Using the "Manage email" and forwarding options, I can change that central webmail on a dime and be up and running.

Any personal experiences with good webmail providers will be appreciated.

Have you tried GMX mail? It is a German company, but has servers in (I believe) Kansas, USA. They've been around for a while- since 1997. They are a subsidiary of United Internet AG.

Not sure if it would meet your needs, but:

There was apprehension at first with the takeover, but once the dust settled, there seems to be relative contentment among users.
I've never had issues with Fastmail.
You may want to lurk about their forum (if you're not doing so already) and get a feel of user's sentiments.
They do have a "new" interface.
(Personally, I've always preferred using my email client over anybody's webmail.)
Currently I'm using EuMX for email hosting. Reasonably priced.
    Their webmail interface is:
SquirrelMail (yea, you don't care for it)
RoundCube (yea, you don't care for it)
    Horde
    Webdisk

    Cheers

Hey guys, what's so bad about gmail?

You don't trust the company in general?

Don't go near them - the support is non-existent. If you get locked out of your email account, nobody answers any support queries and you're stuck forever. Total shambles.

    Anyone here used yandex.ru/yandex.com?

That sounds terrible. I've been trialling GMX for a few weeks now & so far, so good. They do have a forum for problems though. I found them useful.

Not yet, but I may give them a spin as well soon. I am a bit concerned about the servers probably being located in Russia though. I don't mean to cause offence to any Russians reading this, but their sites do have a dodgy reputation for malware. I once contracted a trojan from a Russian journal site. Yandex is huge in Eastern Europe I believe.

Yeah, they are a huge player in Russia and Eastern Europe. The fact they're hosted in Russia doesn't immediately put me off and their web interface is quite nifty (although I hardly ever use it).

If you sign up for an email account using Yandex.com then you get the English webmail, if you use Yandex.ru then you get the Russian interface though you can change to English quite easily. It's serving me quite well so far!

I see that inbox.com is now offering Imap access, so that might be a thought.

I have a couple gmx.com accounts and have never had any problems with them. They offer a variety of services, so they might be another option.

India.com offers a variety of domain names to choose from such as, imail.com or zmail.com along with a few others.

Lavabit and Eumx.net are also decent providers.

All of the above are quite simple and are free, which is always good.

I have a paid fastmail account which I like as well, but I believe the OP mentioned that in his post.

Good luck, there are many out there to choose from.

Slight correction. I have a free eumx.net account that they offered a while back, so I'm not sure if they are still offering free accounts. At any rate, the cost would be minimal. They provide decent support as well.

    Zoho also looks good.

Support is one of my biggest priorities and most are lacking in this area. Thus my paid account at Fastmail.

    Again, good luck.

Thanks for the link. I've been using FastMail for my email for many years, and have been very happy with it. The new interface is excellent and as you pointed out lightning fast too.
