It's going to be out very soon. For now, we can download the trials and the free version.

PC Mag seems to have given the 2012 free version a very good review:

    http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2392249,00.asp

Seems to have some new features as well, including a little app that informs you when Firefox, IE or Chrome is using a lot of memory.

    What AVG promises:

    - Less HDD space required
    - 50 percent faster scans
    - less processes
    - Improved bootup time
    - Improved browser launch time

Time to give it a go? :)

Certainly good changes, programs with many processes always piss me off. Also the GUI is better and more modern in my eyes, removing some of the redundant icons is a good step. Let's hope they also improved the integration of Identity Protection in the product, so you get the feeling that you actually have one product installed instead of two (AVG Anti-Virus and AVG Identity Protection).

Avg 2012 is a lot faster doing on demand scans on my rig which is using an AMD 955 four core processor.

I have a total of 98 gigabyte of data on two partitions. Windows 7 32 bit is on one partition that is using 21 gb, and the other partition is used for storage--movies, documents, and other various files and applications.

Have been using AVG 2011 paid and then updated to AVG 2012 today. 2011 first scan 14 minutes and second scan was approximately seven minutes. 2012 first scan was 7.5 minutes and second scan was 57 seconds. Scan archives, thorough scanning, and scan all files were enabled which is not the default settings for whole computer scan.

Thought the 57 second whole computer scan was a fluke, so I did a third scan, and it clocked in at 59 seconds. Fastest scanner I have ever used.

    OK. Thanks.

I won't be installing it, but I've seen some screenshots with PC Analyzer, so I was wondering whether or not this time AVG made it an optional component.

I installed the free edition using custom install, but I couldn't untick it (it wasn't listed in the list [Email Protection, Languages, Identity Protection and LinkScanner]).

Antivirus and anti-rootkit will always be installed. Maybe a standalone version of IDP will come later.

Interesting. They haven't done well on this year's AV-Comparatives so it will be interesting to see how this changes things.

Also, anyone know if they've added features to the free version?

AV-comparatives' results shouldn't change much, I think the improvements in malware detection have been (mostly) backported to AVG 2011.
