The Microsoft Safety Scanner is a free downloadable security tool that provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It works with your existing antivirus software.

Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner expires 10 days after being downloaded. To rerun a scan with the latest anti-malware definitions, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.

Its just an occasional cleaner like CureIt, Kaspersky AVP Tool, Normal Cleaner, Vipre Rescue and F-Secure Easy Clean.

Just downloaded, wasn't corrupt and worked fine.

    It's also portable.

I also tried it again today after that post and this time it worked... May be some server problem yesterday... looks clean...!!! It looks as the big brother of MRT.exe. It would be better if Microsoft distributes this in place of MRT through MS Update...:)

All Microsoft security products (Forefront, Security Essentials) use the same Microsoft Antimalware Engine.

This looks like a nice no nonsense on demand scanner with no ads or running around in circles just to start a scan. How is the scanning speed? Better than cureit i hope...

Not a MSE user (so no experience with it),but this app zoomed through my system (quick-scan mode;XP sp3;40 Gb used on a 100 Gb partition) in less than 3 minutes.Tried it (found nothing),deleted it.
    Nothing more,nothing less...

Is this program like the SAS OnlineScanner program, which nothing is installed onto the system, just temp files?

It is much more like Dr. Web CureIt, Norman Malware Cleaner, F Secure Easy Clean. It doesn't allow to download updates like SAS portable scanner. :-*

Despite all the MS hate and procrastination from 'experts', the HIPS in this rivals those of some very expensive 3rd party solutions, but it's non-semantic free(doesn't cost anything).

Safety Scanner contains total Antimalware database and MRT contains specific databases for wide spread malwares.
