To get add-ons to bypass the compatibility check, one has to make a new Boolean entry in about:config ...
extensions.checkCompatibility.5.0a;false

 

The Nightlies are at 6.0a1. Aurora at 5.0a2

 

Updates are now working for the Aurora channel.

Aurora, updated nightly, is now my default browser with portable Fx4 and portable Chrome as reserves.

Thank you kind sir. Are any extensions compatible yet? Or should I just install this in a different directory based upon your experience?

EDIT: Also how do you set it for nightly updates. I see three options in Help About. Aurora, Beta, and Release. Also, looks like it just picks up my Firefox profile (which is fine for me for the time being). However is it still recommended to use a fresh profile? Would assume so I just did not feel like reinventing the wheel at the moment.

With expectations that Firefox 5 will be out on June 21, 2011, people are wondering about what exactly will be new relative to Firefox 4. No doubt, there will be a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff in terms of speed and security improvements but will that be easy to "sell"? Firefox is not as successful as Chrome in migrating users to the latest and greatest.

There are allegedly some cosmetic improvements but one needs to look at this blog to appreciate them (if one can)

The way I understand it, the Aurora to beta push will go ahead on schedule but the business of including the "improved" add-on compatibility checking may be delayed.

That probably should have said "automatic" but that's guess.

Either way I installed Firefox v5 beta (as a separate install so I can switch between versions with just a quick change and have all of them handy at a moments notice). Still nice and stable, all my addons seem to have worked ok. Only Echofon did not work with it. No big UI changes like FF4 was which is good because I like the FF4 UI.

 

so what is the real difference here between aurora and nightly other than one is on 5 and the other is on 6 now?? i really dont see much if any difference between them? is anyone here using nightly or primarily aurora?

At least till May 24, there won't be much difference between Aurora and Fx5beta. Then a merge will occur and Aurora will soon thereafter effectively become Fx6-in-the-making.
