Has anyone tried or currently uses Blue Coat K9 Web Protection? Please share your experiences.

I am looking for something to recommend to anyone who may ask for Parental control/content filtering for children.

I placed this Thread here because K9 Web Protection has the option of blocking known Malware sites.

    Thanks in Advance.

    Very good parental control. :D
On malware blocking, well, it blocks suspicious, malware/adware activity... but I'm using avast and the Web Shield and Net Shield block much more.

can DNS be used to block unwanted sites ? IS it configurable or just random checking?

k9 should be used with Standard User Account and admin account should be password protected as there are ways to disable it. In fact a simple google search is enough. Also it will be useful to change default modem/router password and change dns to opendns family shield as k9 works with only windows and mac and not with a linux live cd:p

OpenDNS is configurable to some degree. For example, I specified to always block video sharing categories but made a rule to exclude Youtube. It's very effective and simple to use. I used to use K9 and it worked well but I had a conflict with some security program (I can't remember what it was) so I switched to OpenDNS. When set up in your router you can have one less app sucking resources. At the time though I must say that Bluecoats support did everything they could to help me but to no avail.

    bump.

Was looking around recently and used k9 and opendns.

K9 is a lot more configurable.
OpenDNS can block categories and maximum 25 white/blacklist (and you're gonna need them) , that's about it. It's good that you can set up a router, but sometimes you don't want to restrict every device ( any way to set dns for certain devices?)

K9 has just as much categories, white-lists/black-lists, keywords (important), and locking safe searches ( also important).

I still think every filter is pretty average anyway.
I mean k9 doesn't have online central dashboard to configure options.
Router filters are for all devices, which is annoying.

    pornography/nudity/ads aren't blocked everywhere.
For example, you can still access pornography blogs and forums.

If only there was a filter that blocks all adult sites/pics/video on any website/forum/blog, without having to completely blacklist large sites like msn/wiki/google and all blogs/forums, just to filter out adult content.
