Could you tell me the settings of your scan?
In-depth/smart scan and ThreatSense parameters, then I will check tomorrow if I can reproduce it on my pc (getting such an advantages).

    Smart Scan 1 - 44:50 min.
    Number of scanned objects: 107,287

    Smart Scan 2 - 10:32 min.
    Number of scanned objects: 89,322

    Smart Scan 3 - 10:12 min.
    Number of scanned objects: 89,318

All 3 scans using 5539 signature database.
    XP Pro/sp3
HDD: One TB (58 GB used)

    Smart Scan 4 (using 5540 auto-updated sig DB) - 45:14 min.
    Number of scanned objects: 107,270

    Question:
How will this optimizing benefit me? I only run an on-demand scan maybe once a week, which never finds anything. This on-demand scan is always with an auto-updated sig DB, therefore will always not benefit from caching, since I never need to run a second scan. Am I missing something here?

suppose you have a undetectable virus sample and you have sent to ESET labs.

You update to the next version of the signature database, which is able to detect your virus sample. If your sample was not scanned again, it would not be detected, then the new signature update would be in vain.

Smart optimization does not scan files that have been scanned, unless certain conditions are met.

But Marcos said "Both scans must be run with Smart optimization enabled. Of course, an update cannot be performed in the mean time or the cache will be reset". So gaslad has a point in that the cache is being continuously reset through the week.

wow. As someone asked - can you explain your on-demand settings - I have mine tweaked a fair amount and I had nowhere near that kind of difference between pre and post module upgrade.

"Smart Scan" profile has Smart optimization enabled by default.
    You can check the configuration.
Do the same scan several times (with the same virus signature database).

Twas an interesting exercise, but I can't think of any good reason to continue to use pre-release updates (esssentially beta testing) or Smart Optimization.

I'm reverting to the default settings.

I think that could be due to large archives I have on the disk. By the way, the new feature will be made available for all users shortly in one of the upcoming updates.

So, I have tried it again this morning, with better result.

Both scans performed with the following product:

    Zelfverdedigingsmodule: 1018 (20100812)
    Real-time beveiligingsmodule bestandsysteem: 1004 (20100727)

I performed two in-depth scans with the following options:

    ThreatSense-parameters:

Fast scanning is now available in the live version without pre-release updates enabled.
