Does anyone here know how to create a PE 3.0 disc? I thought that would be of user to people now that Windows 7 has gone gold. I've searched the internet, but the only things I was able to find dealt with 3.0 before the gold release and required the use of the WAIK, barring an ISO.

Yes you have to have WAIK installed to buid a Win PE 3.0. At least that is the only way I know how to do it?

Thanks for that. Like I said, I've been searching the internet for advice on how to create a 3.0 disc and all I've been able to find have been bat files that I don't fully understand. I admit I'm quite ignorant here. If anyone could offer any help on how to build the disc I'd appreciate it.

I would really appreciate some help here. I've tried using bat files I found around the internet to build a PE disc using the WAIK and all I've been able to do successfully is build a disc that sends me to a dos prompt, no giu at all. I've installed the WAIKs for vista and windows 7, tried using winbuilder too, and I get the same result. I have no idea what to do now. I just want a simple bootable OS with little to no apps.

If anyone have a PE disc they'd like to share with me I'd be grateful. I don't think that would be an inappropriate request because they use the WAIK.

Thanks. I have tried all these site before, each time getting the results I mentioned. But I will try again using the windows 7 WAIK just to be sure.

You have to have WAIK installed. Everyone of these sites explains that. You download WAIK iso and burn it to a CD then install it to your computer and then start the build process, its rather simple really. But honestly what do you need Win PE for, if you just want to have a boot CD their are hundreds of them available and all you have to do is burn them to a CD.

Please give me a little more credit than that. I understand the WAIK has to be installed. Both of them have been. If I didn't know that then I would never have gotten to the stage(s) where the ISO gets created. I create the ISO, mount it as a virtual drive, and then copy everything over to my bootable flash. Most of the time they do boot, but I get stuck at a command prompt. I get struck on step 7 here, where you add scripts. I've added the scripts he suggested and linked to, being sure to point to then in the command line, but nothing ever changes. I just get the command line when booting.

    Where have you been looking

All i need in Win PE is the command prompt I typically have different Boot CD's that i use in different situations. But there are a lot of Linux based bootable CD's and there is Microsofts ERD Commander. What are you using the boot cd for? Here is a huge list of Linux Live CD's.

I definitely need a windows-based disc because I use my flash drive for every system I look after, and need access to my anti-malware tools, partitioning tools, etc. Building a winpe 1.0 disc is no problem, but it is very slow. I prefer at least 2.0. The difficult thing is that I do not have and 32-bit OS media which can be used to build the PE disc, and 64-bit media cannot be used. So I'm stuck using the waik.

Have you tried WinBuilder? They have created different projects to make Win PE with a GUI, I found one that looks easy and comes with a document tutorial to help you make it.
    http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=8774&hl=

Their are links to the WinBuilder program and the tutorial document on this page. I haven't tried it yet but I plan on it. It is the only other thing I could find.

He doesn't want Win PE unless it has a GUI so the first link is no good to him I guess

How would I use it otherwise, if there is nothing except a command line?

I have tried Winbuilder, using just about every project they offer. The problem there is that they all require the use of installation media and not the waik. And the only ones that can be used are 32-bit, and I only have 64-bit.

I am unsure about 64bit. But I can give you some info on 32bit, as I have been hammering on this exact thing for about 2 weeks now.

The old way of doing it with something like bart pebuilder has been replaced by either winbuilder or some M$ method. No matter what AFAIK you must have the WAIK installed.

I think I read that you could make your PE image without the source dvd somewhere, but honestly I did not want to learn that much about it. Nor have I the desire at this point to worry about vhd or wim mounting, as they appear to be mounted and held open, which might be nice but not what I am seeking.

I am recreating a PE in RAM method that can be booted from the hdd. In bartPE you could do it with only a few special files and an boot.ini entry.

PE3.0 is proving difficult, or rather the lack of the good old boot.ini is the biggest problem (and all that brings).

So here is my info for you. Do use WinBuilder. I chose the Win7RescuePE project. It includes a lot of basic need tools I use, like Opera and Avira, and some other choise tidbits. Not as much as what I had in bartPE, but enough to get started.

In winbuilder, you do want to use grub4dos as your boot loader. Grub4dos can boot an .iso into RAM, so also be sure you are using the IN RAM option in winbuilder. That is about it, for a basic boot disc.

Well, not exactly it lol. There are some tips and tricks I can share with you. But why muck up a thread more than it is already.

If you need, I can provide you with:

helping to understand what exactly to do with winbuilder -- it can be sort of cryptic at times, and I have been spending a LOT of time lately with it.

how to write a basic script for installing something that is ready to use from RAM (either boot from cd or hdd works both ways) -- for example I finally got a macrium reflect script working (for such a nice project, they left a LOT of commands out of thier MAN page on the scripting side of things).

how to take your nice new "project" and compile it yourself with mkisofs, so that you can pack your own "special" things into it. Very handy if you are making a cd

how to get your BCD set correctly with a script

how to setup grldr and grldr.mbr and menu.lst (needed parts of grub4dos to work in win7).

I don't claim all or any of this as my own, although I have bent it to my will as much as possible.

I cannot give enough credit to Jaclaz for soooo many things boot disc related. There are many many others, but I have had numerous interactions with Jaclaz and he has always helped out immensely. (Jaclaz in at boot-land, msfn and 911cd if you are wondering).

So, let me know what exactly you need help with and I will gladly share what I have to share.

    Sul.

You can make a x32 pe from x64 7 or vista. I do.

You're probably all ready doing this but make sure you use the Deployment Tools Command Prompt. If you want a gui mount the base image and edit the Winpeshl.ini. Like this.

    [LaunchApp]
    AppPath = %SYSTEMROOT%\system32\yourfile manager here

Don't forget to include the app. If you run it from a hard drive or usb flash drive, no need to make an iso.

I've been been running image from windows and other tools from winpe for several years. No problem with the latest build.

Read the documentation included with Waik. The PE user's guide is really all you need.

Can you tell me of this method? I mean, you say you need no iso file? Is this from a cd then? Do you have any experience getting a PE image to load into RAM from a boot entry (BCD), so that you can have the "image" on c: drive, boot into it (into RAM) then while this is in RAM you can wipe/restore image to c: ? This is what I have been doing for 7 like I had it in XP.

Just tried it. Mine failed too.

Any WinPE or BartPE CD will work for IFW. You just need imagew.exe on a USB flash drive. A plugin isn't necessary.

You can even run IFW using your SP recovery CD.

nice, could i extract the sp iso and add the imagew.exe somewhere and rebuild the iso and haveit available on the disc itself? i would simply use the sp disk as my boot image and i can also prevent the sp interface from auto starting thats not to hard. i guess what i mean is there anything else i need to run it or simply just the imagew.exe only?

edit actually i think ill use the o&o one. that has places i can actually put the ifw folder itself and run from the start button. great idea i did not think about before

It seems the only way I could have successfully build a PE disc, version 2.1 or 3.0, was by using a 32-bit respective install media. I've tried every other way; it doesn't seem possible to build anything using just the WAIK that doesn't leave mew with anything more than a command prompt. So I just borrowed a friend's DVD and built it. It was very easy. Everything works really well, except that it doesn't appear to be able to shutdown or restart when you tell it to.

Now I can use Drive Snapshot (RC), but more on that in the relevant thread(s).
