At the moment I consider Paragon Drive Backup 9.0 Express the best freeware image application.

The only problem is that you cannot configure much through it's guide. Here are some tips on how to change it's default settings:

    - Drive Backup 9.0 Express stores it's settings in the layout.ini file in it's mai directory. If you open it with the wordpad you can adventure in the various settings.

    - For changing the default split size of the image find the line:
Image split size (MB) = put your desired size in mb. the default is 2000

    - For changing the compression level find the line:
Compression level = You can use 4 different compression levels. None, Fast, Normal, Best. The default is Fast

    - If you do not want to let the program correct the boot.ini file of the windows (on my system it adds another inexistant startup entry) find the line:
Do not correct boot.ini files = and change it to on. the default is off.

    Hope ti helps,
    Panagiotis

    Hi Pandlouk,

    Great Post!

While in "layout.ini" i can=me across the following line:

    Best compression level ( 2 - 9 ) = 2 <is this to left alone?>

I'll assume 'None...Best' refers to how much compression happens?

    Take Care
    Rico

I'm glad that you found them usefull guys. :D
Rico I haven't figured yet that one but I wouldn't mess with it. Probably the if you change it to a higher number you will achieve better compression but it could take ages to make the image.

    Exactly
