Am I right if I'm guessing that most of these "fails" are due to false positives rather than missed samples?

Could be either. per Virus Bulletin:
Additional info is available on their site (login may be required) under "Test procedures in depth"

This test is for Server level, i think for XP/comsumer level will a bit differ.

    I cannot disagree.
But what I find curious is that 3 of the top-tier AV products Bitdefender, Antivir, F-prot failed on Windows Server, but 2005 October Windows Server test, the same 3 all passed. o_O

That is right. The October test is done on Win 2000 Server. On each test, AVs are tested in different OS to determine their performance on different environments. The main OS we are mainly interested in, Windows XP, is always tested in June each year. The last Win XP test results can be found here:

Question ? Regardless of platform tested, don't the antivirus programs use the same scanning engine and signature database for testing ? Why would it matter what platform was tested, I would think if failed on a server it would fail on an XP desktop.

I disagree, they'd be the same IMHO. The engines are the same.

Yes, your right. Avira, Bitdefender and AVK (because of the Bitdefender engine) failed because of FP's.

F-Prot failed because it didn't find one sample on-access (curiously enough, it was found by its on-demand scanner, though).

    Cheers
    Vlk

Update: BitDefender guys have successfully challenged the false positive, so they are now, together with GData AVK, awarded VB100% as well.
